Connections made and missed form the foundation of this drama following the journeys of eight haunted Londoners in search of redemption. Jim is throwing watermelons off of a rooftop in preparation for a possible suicide when he spies Sue standing on an adjacent rooftop. She, too, is pondering a fatal plunge, and when Jim catches up to her they attempt to find another way out than straight down. Meanwhile, Sue's ex-boyfriend Dean has hit a creative slump. His paintings panned and his poetry eviscerated by critics, Dean is in search of a muse when he meets Gina, the experimental prostitute who lives next door. But Gina doesn't come free for anyone, and Dean quickly discovers that getting a new muse can go both ways. In the wake of a past fling with Dean, Olly is wrestling with his sexual identity. Assigned the task of watching after his deaf-mute brother Chris for the day, Olly discovers that his sibling is completely comfortable with his own homosexuality, and the duo set out on a quest through London's gay community in order to help Chris lose his virginity. On those very same streets walks Pete, a tormented former drug addict with many secrets. Carol watches Pete's every move from afar, hoping that he will eventually lead her to her long lost son, a man Pete used to know back in his violent drug days. Over time, Pete opens up to Carol, and the pair set out into the darkness in search of her son. Their journey will be treacherous, but Pete realizes that the risk of death is well worth one last shot at true redemption. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The notorious life of the U.K.'s "most violent prisoner" serves as the subject of Pusher Trilogy director Nicolas Winding Refn's brutal biopic. Born Michael Peterson but later renamed by his fight promoter, Charles Bronson's sole ambition in life was to become famous. Surmising that the fastest means of accomplishing his goal with such limited opportunities was to cultivate a stylized persona as a hardened criminal, the ambitious do-badder embraced a desperate existence of extreme savagery. But who is the real man behind the warped persona? Seeing as how 28 of Bronson's 34 years behind bars were spent in solitary confinement, that's a difficult question to answer. The terror of the legend comes to vivid life, however, as director Refn explores the twisted alternate reality created by Bronson, and highlights precisely how the controversial criminal staged himself within that anarchistic world. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Writer and director Sofia Coppola puts a new spin on the life and times of one of Europe's most infamous monarchs in this lavish historical drama which fuses a contemporary sensibility with painstaking recreations of the look of the 18th century. Born to Austrian nobility, Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) is only 14 years old when she's pledged to marry Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), the 15-year-old king of France, in an alliance that has everything to do with politics and nothing to do with love. Sent to France and literally stripped of her former life, Marie weds Louis, but to the consternation of the royal court, he seems either unwilling or unable to consummate the marriage while their advisors clamor for an heir to the throne. Young and more than a bit out of step with the new life that's been thrust upon her, Marie gives herself over to the pleasures of life in Versailles, knowing and caring little of the political intrigue that surrounds her. In time, Marie's trusted older brother, Joseph (Danny Huston), is brought in to coach Louis on the finer points of marital relations, and before long the couple is finally blessed with a child. However, as Marie tends to her children in the gilded cage of her palace and enjoys an affair with a Swedish nobleman, political power plays are throwing France into chaos, and the growing ranks of the poor rebel against the royals and their life of privilege. Also starring Rip Torn, Judy Davis, Steve Coogan, and Asia Argento, Marie Antoinette was given a controversial reception when it premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Alan Rickman and Janeane Garofalo headline writer/director Mike Binder's comedy about an American businessman who is summoned to London under the auspice of overseeing an impending business merger, only to discover that he is actually being groomed to replace his British counterpart - who unfortunately has no intentions of giving up his job. Matthew Barnes (Binder) and his wife (Garofalo) thought they were going to London for a brief business trip, little did they realize Matthew's employer had something a bit more permanent in mind. It seems that the powers that be would like to see Matthew's British counterpart John Gissing (Rickman) fired, and would love for Matthew to step in as his official replacement. But John is no dummy, and he's seen this storm brewing on the horizon for quite some time. Now, instead of stepping down peacefully and allowing the situation to play out as his superiors have planned, John schemes to make the American couple's stay in London as unpleasant as humanly possible by sending them on a series of disastrous and humiliating misadventures. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Four friends compare notes on their romantic problems -- which in time become quite interesting indeed -- in this sharp comedy from Great Britain. Sean (Luke De Woolfson), Lenny (Enzo Cilenti), Vincent (James Lance), and Jody (Kate Ashfield) are four pals who meet every evening for dinner at the same neighborhood restaurant. Sean works the night shift at a hospital, and one night he makes a date with Susie (Sienna Guillory), a woman who is visiting her unconscious boyfriend; Sean soon discovers the woman's sexual appetite exceeds his own, and they can't get out of the hospital before taking things to the horizontal level. Lenny is a directory assistance operator for the telephone company and is infatuated with one of his co-workers, Gail (Shauna MacDonald), though his attempts to set up a date end in disaster. Vincent, a supermarket stock clerk, is a notorious womanizer who has a personal policy of never sleeping with the same woman more than three times. And Jody works in computer assembly and offers sarcastic advice to her three mates, especially Sean, whose problems with women she finds especially amusing. Vincent makes the acquaintance of a lonely woman from abroad named Madeline Zozzocolovich (Heike Makatash), and romance soon rears its head, but after Vincent informs her of his three-strikes-and-you're-out rule, Madeline is crushed and disappears, and soon the foursome are scouring a small resort community, hoping to find her before she tries something drastic. Late Night Shopping was the first feature from director Saul Metzstein and screenwriter Jack Lothian; the film won the C.I.C.A.E. Award at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This goofy, delightfully sophomoric British spoof on spaghetti westerns was made for only $15,000 and that, along with the booming faux-Morricone score, only heightens the humor. Filmed in lush, green southwestern England (doubling for arid New Mexico), it chronicles the exploits of taciturn hero No Name and his stereotypical Indian side-kick Running Sore as they search for the nefarious villain The Squint. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Saffron (Julia Sawalha) meets at home with her fellow students to plan a school report while her mother, Edina (Jennifer Saunders), floats upstairs in the new aquatic isolation tank she's ordered from Los Angeles. This being Edina, of course, she doesn't brave the iso tank alone; best pal Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) is also there, chain smoking as usual. After the gruesome twosome crash Saffy's study session to coo lasciviously at Danny (James Lance), an uncharacteristically cute new addition to the girl's nerdy social circle, Patsy heads off after the young lad. Edina then throws a typical tantrum in order to elicit an invitation to attend Saffy's presentation at the school. Threatening to adopt a Romanian baby if she doesn't get her way, Edina even goes so far as to phone her usually empty-headed personal assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks), who has become a crisp, efficient force of nature ever since meeting with an occupational hypnotist. When Bubble vanishes, leaving word that "the goods" from Romania are on their way, Eddy shrugs it off and heads for the school, which Saffy has graciously allowed her to visit. Whisked off for a school tour with the headmaster, Patsy and Eddy flash back to their own school days, when Eddy got Pats in trouble for getting it on with a male student named Tony (Tim Woodward). When the headmaster of Saffy's school turns out to be the very same Tony, the old flames get hot and heavy -- right in the classroom where Saffy is giving her presentation. Meanwhile, a woman from the adoption agency arrives, several dark-haired orphans in tow. But with all of this going on, who could that be floating in Eddy's isolation tank? Originally broadcast on BBC 1 on December 3, 1992, Absolutely Fabulous: Iso Tank marked series one, episode four of this popular Brit-com. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide
