Raoul Bova Movies

Handsome and muscular Italian leading man Raoul Bova is also a trained athlete and national swimming champion. He began his acting career on Italian television, joining the cast of the award-winning crime drama La Piovra (shown in France as La Mafia) during its seventh season, which led to starring roles in several subsequent La Piovra TV movies and miniseries. Bova made his European film breakthrough in 1993 with the romantic fantasy Piccolo Grande Amore as a hunky watersports instructor, and he's played romantic leads ever since. He played a handsome plumber in the comedy Comincio Tutto Per Caso and a heroic husband in the thriller Coppia Omicida. In 2001, he appeared with Italian film legends Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Gianinni in Lina Wertmüller's historical drama Francesca e Nunziata. The next year he was in his first American film, Avenging Angelo, starring Anthony Quinn in his final role. After returning to Italy to play opposite Giovanna Mezzogiorno in the romantic drama La Finestra di Fronte, he did another Hollywood project as Diane Lane's love interest in Audrey Wells' romantic comedy Under the Tuscan Sun. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

A man struggling to get ahead and provide for his family takes some unscrupulous turns that come back to haunt him in this drama from filmmaker Daniele Luchetti. Claudio (Elio Germano) has worked in construction much of his adult life and is looking for an opportunity to move into contracting. Claudio is passionately in love with his wife Elena (Isabella Ragonese), but while he's emotionally shattered when she died in childbirth, it isn't long before he begins burying his emotions in his professional life. While working on a project for his boss Porcari (Giorgio Colangeli), Claudio finds the body of an illegal immigrant from Romania who was working off the books as a security guard, and Claudio persuades Porcari to give him a subcontracting assignment in exchange for keeping quiet about the dead man. Needing a cheap work crew to put up a building, Claudio borrows money from Ari (Luca Zingaretti), who has made a small fortune in several illegal enterprises, and hires a handful of illegal aliens to help with the construction. But before long, the inexperience of the workers puts Claudio behind schedule, and he's paid a visit by Gabriela (Alina Madalina Berzunteanu), a woman from Romania looking for her missing husband -- the same man whose body was found by Claudio. La Nostra Vita (aka Our Life) was an official selection at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Add Karol: A Man Who Became Pope to Queue Add Karol: A Man Who Became Pope to top of Queue
While the major American TV networks were jockeying to be the first to present a filmed biography of the late Pope John Paul II, cable's humble Hallmark Channel managed to beat everyone to the punch with the four-hour Karol: A Man Who Became Pope. Actually, this made-for-TV film was a Polish-Italian co-production, debuting on Italian television as Karol, un Uomo Diventato Papa on April 8, 2005, and subsequently released theatrically in Poland. Curiously, it had been filmed in English, so no dubbing was necessary -- thus enabling Hallmark to rush the production onto American screens as early as August 15, 2005. Piotr Adamczyk stars as Karol Wojtyla, whose tireless fight for humanity and basic fundamental rights begins with the German invasion of his native Poland in 1939. Appalled at the brutal treatment afforded his Jewish friends, Karol turns to religion as a means of making a difference in the world, and with the help of several other like-minded individuals mounts a nonviolent, but extremely effective, anti-Nazi resistance. Ordained as a priest at war's end, Karol finds himself fighting another form of godless totalitarianism, this one from the Communists who have overtaken his country. Ultimately, Father Karol Wojtyla's noble mission culminates in his being elected as Pope John Paul II in 1978 -- and it was surely no coincidence that Poland's liberation was now but a matter of time. Although A Man Who Became Pope looks lavish and expensive, it was very economically produced, and had made back its cost many times over before its acquisition by Hallmark. The film is also a "winner" in terms of its straight-on portrayal of the pontiff, and the commendably sincere, unadorned performances of virtually every actor in the cast. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Alien vs. Predator follows billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) and his team of drillers, scientists, and archaeologists, to an obscure pyramid site in Antarctica. Among the icy ruins, allegedly, lies the proof of an empire predating humankind. Once there, however, the group finds more than ancient sarcophaguses and hieroglyphics; rather, their discovery consists of dismembered human skeletons and fossilized remains of the alien creatures that appear to have violently burst out of their chests. Even more horrifying is the evidence suggesting that the aliens may still exist. Indeed, there are aliens below the pyramids, but an equal threat looms above: three Predators, all on the verge of manhood, are engaged in a gruesome rite of passage -- every hundred years, young Predators must travel to Earth and take on a hunting ritual in order to complete the transition to adulthood or die in the process. Before long, the humans find themselves battling for their own lives as the Predators and aliens continue their fight for superiority. The film also features Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Ewen Bremmer, Colin Salmon, and Agathe de la Boulaye. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Young married couple Giovanna (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) and Filippo (Filippo Nigro) have been married long enough to have become almost completely jaded by their lots in life, with most of their individual aspirations having been set aside some time ago. As their marriage begins to fall apart, the two encounter a strange old man (Massimo Girotti) who calls himself Simone since he can't seem to recall his real name or much about his past history. Filippo brings the man home to stay with them, which initially irritates Giovanna. Over time, she gradually befriends the confused old man and eventually notices a tattoo on his arm indicative of his being a WWII Holocaust survivor. Taking "Simone" to an old Roman ghetto, she helps him remember his name (Davide) and his time spent in that very ghetto -- which includes recalling the very painful memory of his lover Simone's capture and murder at the hands of the Nazis. Meanwhile, Giovanna has been spending her free time impulsively peeping across the street at her attractive neighbor Lorenzo (Raoul Bova) -- who in turn has been spying on her. Giovanna is thus forced to decide between Filippo and Lorenzo, as well as possibly realizing a long dormant professional dream that her new friend Davide may be able to help her undertake. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

A mother who thinks of marriage in terms of business butts heads with a daughter who has her own unusual ideas about love in Lina Wertmuller's screen adaptation of Maria Orsini Natale's historical novel. Francesca (Sophia Loren) was a woman of common birth whose beauty and charm so entranced Prince Giordano Montorsi (Giancarlo Giannini) that he took her hand in marriage in the 1890s. Francesca and the Prince had a baby, Federico, and when the boy became seriously ill, Francesca pledged to the Lord that if her son was spared, she would adopt a needy orphan. Federico recovered, and true to her word, Francesca and the Prince adopted a nine-year-old girl, Nunziata. Years later, Nunziata has grown to become an attractive young woman, and Francesca watches over the Prince's financial affairs, having learned a thing or two about business from helping her father manage his thriving pasta company. Francesca does a fine job of handling the royal accounts, but when one business deal goes spectacularly sour, the Prince decides he should mind the books from now on; he proves to have no skills for the task, and the royal family is soon in dire financial straits. Eager to put the family back on its feet, Francesca begins to broker a marriage between Federico (Raoul Bova) and the daughter of a wealthy shipping tycoon. However, Federico is less than enthusiastic about the idea, largely because he's fallen in love with his adopted sister Nunziata. Francesca is appalled at this and overrules his objections, but after Federico goes to the altar, Nunziata begins arranging a lucrative wedding of her own; Nunziata's plan is to collect a large dowry, and use the money to fund a competing pasta company that will put her mother's firm out of business. On convalescent leave on his birth-island off Dalmatia, Franco (Marco Leonardi), a Croatian-speaking soldier in the Italian army, sees things that cause him to question his loyalty to the Italian rulers in the area.
