A man follows his nose into a strange and dangerous conspiracy in this offbeat sci-fi comedy/drama from writer and director Kim Nguyen. In the near future, global warming has had an unexpected side effect in Montreal -- while truffles have sometimes been found growing in underground caverns, the higher temperatures have caused them to spread as they never have before. Charles (Roy Dupuis) is a truffle hunter with an unusually keen nose, and he has a remarkable gift for finding the delectable edible fungus. Charles and his wife Alice (Céline Bonnier) make use of his talent by running a small restaurant where connoisseurs can taste the fruit of his labors. But there isn't as much money in finding truffles as Charles would hope, and when his abilities come to the attention to a mysterious fur company, he's willing to accept a lucrative business proposal. But Charles doesn't know just what he's looking for at first, and when he finds out, he discovers he's involved in a nefarious scheme with not just international but interstellar implications. A man pondering the unrecognized aspects of space travel has more than a few problems to contend with on Earth in this French Canadian drama. Phillippe (Robert Lepage) is "professional student" who lives with his ailing mother (Anne-Marie Cadieux) in a small, run-down apartment in Quebec. Phillippe has spent years working on his doctoral thesis, which looks at the philosophical and emotional consequences of the race into space between the United States and the Soviet Union during the 1960s and '70s. Phillippe just barely supports himself as a telemarketer, his cold-calling has put him in touch with a former girlfriend who isn't especially happy to hear from him, and an attempt to discuss his research with a former Russian cosmonaut has near-disastrous results. Phillippe also has to put up with his younger brother André (also played by Lepage), a television weather announcer who has money, a small degree of fame, a handsome boyfriend, and almost no respect for Phillippe. As his mother's health takes a severe turn for the worst, Phillippe's luck seems to have changed at last when he's invited to Russia to discuss his recently published thesis on the space program, but André is not willing to help look after their mother. After their father died and their mother left them for a life in Spain with her Spanish lover, the Tanguay siblings were understandably perturbed. To protect their younger sister Isabelle (Fanny Mallette) from the truth, sisters Catherine (Marina Orsini) and Martine (Celine Bonnier) and brother Luc (Stephane Demers) told Isabelle that their mother had died. Unfortunately, twenty years later, the repercussions of this lie are all too apparent: Isabelle, now 25, has the emotional maturity of an 11-year-old, and harbors a grudge against the world and Catherine -- now a schoolteacher -- in particular. Strongly evocative of an old film noir but punctuated with '90s style violence, this dark Canadian detective drama centers on a renegade ex-police detective who tries to find the identity of the enigmatic man who has been threatening his life. High strung, edgy Detective Marceau loses his job with the Montreal police department when while walking through a darkened train yard filled with abandoned cars, he observes a department colleague tooting up with a pair of coke dealers in a battered caboose. Something inside Marceau snaps and without flinching he shoots all three in cold blood. Afterward, he quits the force. Six months pass and he wanders by the academy one day. There he spies Camile, a cop-in-training who cannot bear to use a gun. He decides to help her accept the violence inherent in policework; in exchange he wants her to act as his body guard while he tries to find the would be killer. His main suspect is a psychopathic child molester, Boule de Pool. Meanwhile Marceau and Camile begin to get closer until their passion violently erupts in the caboose one night. The "Wind From Wyoming" is a breeze said to contain erotic properties. This bizarre comedy, set in Montreal, has the feel and plotlines of a soap opera. Lea loves Reo, a rising boxer, but Reo loves Lea's mother Lizette. Lizette's husband, who is also Reo's trainer, is fit to be tied. Lea's sister Manon has a crush on famed New Age author Chester Celine who is coming to Montreal. To properly align the affections of these people a hypnotist is hired. This arty Canadian film is adapted from Robert Lepage's successful 1988 stageplay and more traditional cinematic scenes. The story centers on Montreal art student Madeleine and her unhealthy romantic relationship with Professor Jacques. Trouble comes when Jacques abruptly leaves, offering Madeleine no explanation for his departure. Distraught and blaming herself, Madeleine decides to travel to Venice to kill herself. Once there, Madeleine encounters the drug-addicted Constance, who gives the graduate student a new perspective on the situation. While Madeleine reassembles her life, Jacques too has made some major changes. After moving to New York, he begins wearing women's clothing and calling himself Jennifer.
