New York City may be the city that never sleeps, but that means some people have to stay awake all night to look after the folks whose days begin after the sun goes down; this made-for-premium-cable drama looks at a group of cabbies trying to get by while working the night shift. The Lady Luck Cab Company is a taxi service run by Box (Sarita Choudhury), who inherited the failing business from her late father and is struggling to keep it afloat against long economic odds as Lady Luck's drivers work long shifts in some of the Big Apple's less picturesque neighborhoods. Hershey (Danny Glover), one of Lady Luck's drivers, was once a professional boxer, but when his athletic career went south, so did his wife, and now he drives a hack while trying to romance George (Pam Grier), a good-looking waitress who likes Hershey, but is frustrated with his schedule, which rarely allows him a night off. This is bad news for Hershey, since Ralph (Paul Calderon), a regular at the diner where George works, has been making a play for her as well. Another driver, Salgado (Michelle Rodriguez), is a short-fused Latin American woman who is frequently the victim of sexual harassment from her customers, which makes her all the more difficult to be around. Jose (Bobby Cannavale) thinks he's hit the jackpot when he discovers a briefcase full of cash has been left in his cab, though he has reason to believe it's stolen. And Rasha (Sergej Trifunovic), a refugee from Bosnia, is still tormented by the violence that cost his family their lives, and has trouble concentrating on his driving, leading him into more than one auto accident. While the drivers deal with their individual dilemmas, all of them are suddenly wary of their customers, thanks to reports of a serial killer preying on New York's cab drivers. Produced for the Showtime premium cable network, 3 A.M. was screened at the Sundance Film Festival prior to its broadcast debut, where it earned an enthusiastic reception. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Emir Hadzihafisbegovic stars in Croatian writer-director Rajko Grlic's madcap farce Border Post (AKA Karaula) as Lt. Pasic, a soldier in the Yugoslav army stationed on the border between Albania and Macedonia, circa 1987. Constantly drunk and dissatisfied with life, he suddenly feels a shooting pain in his gonads, and consults one of his subordinates, the enlisted medical student Siriscevic (Toni Gojanovic. Siriscevic promptly diagnoses the condition as syphilis, which Pasic, it seems, contracted from a local hooker. Pasic forces the young officer to prescribe an antidote for him, but it will take three weeks. In need of an excuse for his inability to return home and make love to his wife, Mirjana (Verica Nedeska-Trajkova), the lieutenant concocts the story of a militia conflict: an imminent attack from the Albanian army that is forcing all of the troops to remain on guard. He shuttles Siriscevic to Mirjana, to tell the woman this story, but in the interim, Pasic must back up his words by actually declaring a state of emergency - which sends soldiers into a state of near hysteria - scurrying into battle and digging trenches - and thus threatens to ignite a legitimate international crisis. A reluctant Yugoslav hitman working in New York City finds his fate inescapably tied with that of his ex-wife and her law-enforcing current boyfriend in director Vladan Nikolic's contemplative character study in which all reality is subjective. An orphan from Bosnia who has been forced to assume the role of killer for hire by a blackmailing former covert-operations agent, the man known as Uncle Vanya (Sergej Trifunovic) is told that he must complete one final job before he is permitted to retire. When the simple money-for-drugs deal goes south and Uncle Vanya is forced to take a hostage, an already complicated situation takes a further turn for the worse when it's revealed that Uncle Vanya's hostage is none other than his former wife, Anna (Geno Lechner). As Anna's current boyfriend uses his police authority to close in on the pair and Uncle Vanya's enraged boss dispatches his bumbling thugs to scour the city for the killer-in-hiding, Uncle Vanya and Anna attempt to reconcile their past while begrudgingly acknowledging that a future together is impossible. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

After producer Oliver Stone saw Serbian director Peter Antonijevic's political drama The Little One (1992), he sent him Robert Orr's screenplay, which Orr based on the true story of an American mercenary in Bosnia. Orr had been a photographer's assistant during the war. Thus, Antonijevic directed the first 100% American-funded film about the Yugoslav conflict, beginning with a Paris prologue: Former U.S. military official Joshua (Dennis Quaid) entered the Foreign Legion after his wife (Nastassja Kinski) was killed in Paris by Muslim fundamentalists. Six years later, in Bosnia during 1993, Joshua and his pal Peter (Stellan Skarsgard), fight together on the Serbian side. After Peter dies from a grenade tossed by a young girl, Joshua shoots another youth on the side of the enemy. In a prisoner exchange, psycho Serb Goran (Sergej Trifunovic), a Muslim-hater, and Joshua wind up with pregnant Vera (Natasa Ninkovic), victim of a Muslim rape. When Goran threatens to shoot her baby, Joshua kills Goran. After Vera rejects the child, her family turns against her, and Joshua drives mother and child to a refugee center. Eventually, Joshua attempts to get Vera and her baby out of the country, but they encounter death-dealing Croatian marauders. Set during the Belgrade anti-war student demonstrations of 1992, and based upon a novel by Slobodoan Selenic, this Serbian drama uses the parallel romantic tales of two generations of Serbian to comment upon and compare the brutality inherit in Milosevic's regime to that of Tito's with the point that the former is equal to or even worse than the latter. Builka is photographing participants in the demonstrations for her hip young publisher when she discovers Bogdan, a Serbian soldier with a broken leg who has been unable to get much help at the hospital. This is because he was born in a Croatian village. But despite his birthplace, Bogdan hates the Croats because they commandeered his ancestral home. Builka, who simply hates war, kindly takes Bogdan home and ministers him. She listens to his naïve, hateful rhetoric and counters it with a more logical pacifistic view. The two continue sparring and eventually they fall in love. Unfortunately, love is not stronger than Bogdan's sense of patriotism and he is again lured to the battle fields. While her relationship with Bogdan blossoms and fades, Builka runs across the WW II era diaries of her grandmother Jelena, a wealthy young woman whose country estate was seized by Tito's followers. Her step-father is then tossed in prison. To help get him out, Jelena cozies up to the brutal partisan leader Krsman, a man she simultaneously loathes and feels attracted to.
