In this dramatic murder mystery from the director of God's Army, Richard Dutcher -- who is also this film's writer, producer, and star -- plays Wes Clayton, a young deputy sheriff who resides in a quiet Mormon community called Brigham. The town is turned upside down when a woman from California is found murdered near her car. Wes, with the aid of his young deputy (Matthew A. Brown), the town's retired sheriff (Wilford Brimley), and an idealistic secretary (Carrie Morgan), is sent to investigate the bizarre occurrence. A federal agent (Tayva Patch) also becomes involved, and Wes slowly finds himself becoming the spiritual leader of this typically sleepy small town. He must unveil some of its underlying secrets to solve the murder, while also trying to keep the peace of the Mormon community surrounding him. This feature, like God's Army, was independently produced by Dutcher with the aid of Mormon supporters. ~ Jason Clark, Rovi

In Nick Katsapetses' second feature film, three couples film their lives together as part of a filmmaker's master's thesis project, and as is often the case, the camera does not capture them on a good day. Gray and Daniel (Steven Sorensen and Matthew Rozen) are only a few days away from their commitment ceremony, but their relationship seems ready to crash and burn at any moment, largely thanks to Daniel's constant infidelity. Carrie (Carrie Morgan), on the other hand, no sooner turns on the camera than she's dumped by her girlfriend. Her return to single life and her less than cordial encounters with her ex don't go especially well. There is a third couple, who are happy together -- except no one can stand them. Shot in 16 mm for a mere $10,000, The Joys of Smoking received enthusiastic notice when it was screened at the 1999 San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This gay sex farce centers on Steven, an adorable but socially awkward fellow in his 20s who becomes even more depressive than usual after his shallow, flighty lover Derek dumps him. To help him cheer up, his buddy Pam invites Steven and her other LA friends up to San Francisco for the weekend. The men arrive and soon they couple up and sexual mayhem ensues. Chief among them is the boorish Spencer who is supposedly straight. The lesbians become so disgusted by the unbridled revelry that they return to LA, leaving the men with no way back. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
