Tally Brown Movies

As a film actress, Tally Brown is best known for her work in early Andy Warhol films as well as those of other avant-garde filmmakers. In the early 1950s, Brown founded Miami's Fine Arts Conservatory. During the '60s and '70s, she became a popular singer in New York's "underground" hotspots such as Reno Sweeney's and the Continental Baths. In addition to appearing in films, Brown also performed off Broadway. West German filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim made Brown the subject of her documentary Tal Brown, New York in 1980. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Tally Brown was a star of New York underground films and a denizen of its underworld in the late 1960s -- about as far away as one could imagine as the destination for this classically trained opera and blues singer. In this documentary, Rosa von Praunheim relies on extensive interviews with Brown, as she recounts her collaboration with Warhol, Taylor Mead and others, as well as her friendships with Holly Woodlawn, Divine, and others. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

He also has some encounters with "underground film stars" (one being Tally Brown) and assorted other folk, in 1978, the twilight of the pre-AIDS era in the gay world. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This free-wheeling sex spoof features the Warhol "factory" personality, transvestite Holly Woodlawn. At the time this film was made, Warhol was not so interested in making films and was turning his attentions to producing the magazine, Interview. His film celebrities and the sensibility they served found new outlets, such as this one. Told in a series of vignettes, the story concerns a country girl (Woodlawn) who comes to the big city hoping to become a star. Colorful characters abound in this low-budget film, as do sexual situations. One character is a cab-driving nun, another is a midget wrestler. The names of these characters poke fun at famous movie and theater roles. One is named "Blanche Dubois," another is "Mary Poppins," yet another is "Rhett Butler," and so on. One highlight of the film is a scene which parodies Busby Berkeley musicals. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

No President, Jack Smith's last 16 mm feature, combines found footage with his own production -- a crazed account of former Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie being abducted by pirates and auctioned off in a Baghdad slave market. A heavily made-up Irving Rosenthal plays Willkie in distress and Tally Brown gives a notable supporting performance as a feisty slave girl. Willkie himself appears in newsreel clips, posing with cows while visiting the Future Farmers of America (a wicked in joke from Jack Smith on behalf of all the gay men who were also members of their own FFA!). ~ Nicole Gagne, All Movie Guide

The protagonists are secondary and uni-dimensional in this unlikely actioner about a divorced father (James Brolin) tearing through New York chasing the man who kidnapped his daughter (Abby Bluestone). Sean Boyd (Brolin) is an ex-cop with an enemy on the force out to kill him. Between dodging his would-be assassin, fighting off street thugs, and getting crashed into by one car after another, Boyd is not about to give up or get seriously hurt. In the meantime the police themselves are too inept to catch the kidnapper (Cliff Gorman), and the winsome Marie (Julie Carmen) has decided to hang out with Boyd and help him find his daughter. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The secrets of a small New England town are violently exposed on Christmas Eve in this proto-slasher shocker. The owner of the long-abandoned Butler estate is desperate to sell, and dispatches his lawyer from New York to negotiate its purchase by the town council. Meanwhile, an inmate from a nearby insane asylum breaks loose and makes his way to the old mansion to take bloody revenge for a crime kept hidden for 35 years. The maniac makes mysterious phone calls to various prominent citizens, telling them that "Marianne" has returned, and lures each to the Butler house to meet their doom. The mayor's daughter, Diane, receives a visit from a man who claims to be Jeremy Butler, the mansion's owner, in town to investigate his lawyer's disappearance. Together they attempt to unravel the sinister mystery of the Butler house, which turns out to be a harrowing tale of incest, insanity and mass murder. Cult favorites Mary Woronov and John Carradine are featured in the cast of this eerie thriller, which also includes cameos from Warhol Factory legends Candy Darling and Ondine. ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide
