Mexico de Mis Recuerdos (My Memories of Mexico) is a lavish period picture, a genre popular with war-weary Mexican audiences. Set during the controversial Porfirio Diaz regime, the film's hero is Joaquin Parrave as Diaz's aide. Befriending a group of travelling entertainers, Parrave does his best to protect the performers from harm as they wend their way through the country. He also develops a crush on a refined young lady (Sofia Alvarez) who joins the show folk so that she can be nearer to her boyfriend (Luis Aldas). Many of the film's highlights are staged at the Teatro Principal, one of Mexico's most popular music halls. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this Spanish-language comedy with echoes of a subplot in Chaplin's City Lights, the Mexican comedian Cantinflas stars as a down-and-outer who feigns an identity as the brother of a rich woman. Over time, he takes advantage of the assumed persona to elevate himself first to the maid's beau, then to 'master of the house' status, but the ruse becomes increasingly difficult to sustain over time, resulting in some fairly outrageous complications. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Santa was based on the incredibly popular novel by Mexican author Don Federico Gamboa. So beloved was the original novel that audiences were predisposed to adore the film, whether it was any good or not. The story concerns the romantic travails of the homely pianist (Carlos Orellana) of a seedy house of "ill repute." The hero harbors a seemingly hopeless love for the house's prettiest inhabitant, played by the curvaceous Lupita Tovar. When the girl is injured in an accident, the pianist sacrifices his all to finance a life-saving operation -- but will his grand gesture turn out to be futile? Santa represented the first directorial effort of Spanish film idol Antonio Moreno. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
