Peter Berg made his directorial debut with this black comedy about suburbanite Kyle Fisher (Jon Favreau), his future bride Laura (Cameron Diaz) and his four pals -- brothers Adam (Daniel Stern) and Michael (Jeremy Piven), mechanic Charles (Leland Orser), and real estate agent Robert (Christian Slater). Kyle and gang head off to a stag-party fling in Vegas. The fun features hired stripper Tina (Carla Scott), killed accidentally during a bathroom make-out session with Michael. When a hotel security man investigates, Robert kills him. The group buries the bodies in the desert and head home. Back in L.A., guilt trips surface along with bouts of paranoia, Laura intends that nothing stand in the way of her wedding plans. Filmed on location in Oregon, the made-for-cable Halloweentown stars Debbie Reynolds as Aggie Cromwell, the peppery grandma to typical American kids Marnie (Joey Zimmerman), Dylan (Joey Zimmerman) and Sophie (Emily Roeske). During her annual visit to the youngsters' mother Gwen (Judith Hoag), Aggie reveals that she is a benevolent witch, and that Gwen and the kids all have latent magical powers. Whisking the three little ones off to Halloweentown, Aggie subsequently does battle with evil forces conjured up by Gwen's old flame Kalabar (Robin Thomas), a warlock with delusions of grandeur and a nasty habit of transforming children into zombies. Jim Varney stars in this comedy as Carl Banks, a famous counterfeiter who has escaped from prison. However, while he eludes the Police, the FBI and the Mafia, he manages to get caught in a trap 10-year-old Timmy Taylor has set in back yard. Figuring it would be a lot more exciting than summer school, Timmy keeps Carl captive in his tree house, hoping to at least hold him in stir over the weekend so he can bring him to school for show and tell on Monday. Based on a true story, the sentimental TV movie A Thousand Men and a Baby takes place during the final months of the Korean War in 1953. Spiritually adopting an abandoned boy, the crew members of the U.S.S. "Point Cruz" set about to find a proper home for the infant. All the while, ship's doctor Hugh Keenan (Richard Thomas) struggles to keep the baby alive. According to some sources, the grown-up protagonist of the story appears in a bit role in this film. In the first episode of a two-part story, the Frasier gang gears up for an elaborate Halloween costume party. Inasmuch as his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) has declared that the theme will be "literary" characters, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) dons the nose and assumes the mantle (and much of flowery speechifying) of Cyrano de Bergerac. Another "based on an actual event!" TV movie, Murder Between Friends is set in 1980s New Orleans. Two friends become involved in murder when the wife of one of them begins cheating on her spouse. Constructed along the lines of "Rashomon", the script offers two entirely different accounts of the homicide and the events leading up to it. Timothy Busfield heads the cast as the hardworking prosecutor who wants to cut through the bull. A psychotic estranged wife attempts to sabotage her husband's new romance by turning her children against his lover in this thriller. Jude (Jamie Lee Curtis) had abandoned her husband Robert (Peter Gallagher) and their three sons several years earlier. Unfortunately, now that Robert has filed for divorce after falling in love with Callie (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), the sweet-natured assistant principal at his son's school, Jude is back for revenge. At first she merely tries to convince the children that Callie is an intruder on the rightful family, but the psychotic Jude's actions soon turn dangerous, as she attempts to frame the educator for assault. Things become particularly sticky when she tries to win over her 12-year-old son Kes (Luke Edwards), involving him in a potentially deadly scheme. Director Yves Simoneau borrows from numerous other stalker dramas and attempts to ratchet the action to a feverish pitch in the conclusion, but Jude's behavior remains unbelievable, and most critics found Mother's Boys an unconvincing, often over-the-top psychodrama. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment produced the very short-lived NBC sci-fi series Earth 2. The program unfolds in the year 2192, when rampant pollution on the Earth has forced everyone to move into space stations, and has generated scores of children with chronic health problems thanks to the lack of a regular atmosphere. Gorgeous scientist Devon Adair (Deborah Farentino) has one such child - a young son, Ulysses (Joey Zimmerman) saddled with a huge life-support system that he must tote around. In an effort to make life easier for both of them, Devon hijacks a spaceship with a bunch of explorers in tow, and sets off for "planet G889," which on the surface appears to be a fresh, unspoiled and uninhabited world. But appearances are misleading; when the group mistakenly crashes on the far side of the planet, they discover that it is populated by hosts of strange creatures including the zombie-like, telepathic Terrians, the scavenging Grendlers, and the adorable but deadly Kobas. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
