Anna Nicole Smith Movies

Credited as being the biggest Playboy Playmate of the Year in terms of height, weight, and measurements, former-model-turned-actress Anna Nicole Smith was, in the mid-'90s, the epitome of the classic voluptuous blonde. Drawing comparisons to such legendary beauties as Marilyn Monroe due to her penchant for white dresses and sleepy bedroom eyes, the one-time Guess? model courted controversy for both her marriage to an elderly billionaire and the heated lawsuit pertaining to his estate following his death.

Born Vickie Lynn Hogan in Houston, TX (she moved to Mexia, TX, as a teenager), Smith's ascent to fame began when she was chosen as May 1992's Playboy Playmate of the Month. Voted Playmate of the Year shortly thereafter, the plus-sized platinum-blonde soon appeared in a pair of Playboy videos before making her feature debut in 1994's The Hudsucker Proxy. Following an appearance in that same year's Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, Smith continued her association with the legendary men's magazine by appearing in a series of videos in addition to producing and starring in the steamy action thriller Skyscraper (1995). In 1987, Smith separated from her first husband Billy Smith, with whom she had one son; the couple later divorced and Anna Nicole married oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall in June 1994. Following Marshall's death in August the following year, Smith embarked on a heated legal battle with the former billionaire's remaining family in which she was ultimately rewarded 88 million dollars. Though she faded from the spotlight moving into the new millennium, Smith reemerged when, following the success of the MTV reality series The Osbournes, she was approached by E! Entertainment Television to be the subject of a similar series. The Anna Nicole Show debuted to general critical malaise in August 2002. Against all odds, the show remained on the air for the better part of two seasons, thanks largely to the morbid curiosity of viewers who found it virtually impossible look away from the disaster that seemed to be unfolding right before their very eyes.

In the turbulent three years that followed, Smith endured a series of disheartening blows. On September 10, 2006, just 20 days after the birth of her daughter Dannielynn, Smith's 20-year-old son Daniel died suddenly due to a lethal combination of antidepressants and methadone. November of that same year found the former model hospitalized for pneumonia in the same Bahamas medical center in which her son had recently died, and it was right around that time that Smith became involved in a bitter legal dispute over her lavish waterfront mansion in the Atlantic Ocean paradise. Her troubles showed no signs of slowing when, in January of 2007, Smith was ordered to by the court to submit her baby daughter for DNA testing as a result of a heated custody battle with a celebrity photographer who claimed to be the girl's biological father (Smith remained insistent that her longtime lawyer and companion Howard K. Stern was the father). Just a few short weeks later, the case that Smith had filed against her landlord was thrown out of the court by a Bahamas judge, leaving the path clear for the owner of the home to proceed with his eviction lawsuit against her, and on February 7, 2007, a woman dissatisfied with the results of Trimspa X32 -- a weight-loss supplement for which Smith served as spokeswoman -- filed a lawsuit against Smith citing "false and misleading" advertising. The following afternoon, Smith was discovered unresponsive in her Hard Rock Hotel room in Seminole, FL, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead within the hour. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A couple risks their lives in the name of all things fabulous in this comedy of errors, set against the backdrop of West Hollywood's annual Halloween Parade. Wasabi Tuna's title refers to the ho-hum sushi costumes that boyfriends Harvey (Barney Cheng) and Evan (Jason London) have dreamed up for themselves and their friends to wear to the big bash. But when their sassy pall Emme (Alanna Ubach) offers up another suggestion -- that they dress as hardcore East L.A. gangstas -- the couple jumps at the chance. However, when the boutiques on Rodeo Drive don't yield the authentic ghetto fashions they need, the friends hit the streets to beg, steal, or borrow what it takes to "look the part," and end up the unwitting carriers of an illegal cache of gang weaponry. Co-starring Antonio Sabato Jr., SNL funnyman Tim Meadows, and reality-TV widow Anna Nicole Smith (playing herself), Wasabi Tuna received a limited West Coast release in the spring of 2004. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

More tabloid filmmaking from the team responsible for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, this 75-minute cable documentary profiles America's favorite model turned-gold digger-turned-TV "star" Anna Nicole Smith. Launching her career as a centerfold model, the Texas-born Smith quickly rises to superstardom as a fashion model, catching the eye of much-older billionaire J. Howard Marshall. Her subsequent marriage to Marshall, who, upon his death, leaves her virtually his entire fortune, enrages the man's family, sparking a lawsuit over Smith's inheritance, although she ultimately emerges triumphant. Unfortunately, our heroine is not so successful in battling her twin demons of alcohol and drugs. To the amazement of everyone in the universe, a blowzy but unbowed Smith parlays her notoriety into one of cable TV's most successful reality series. While the basic visceral attraction of Dark Roots is obvious, the film has its poignant moments, especially when interviewing the people of Mexia, TX, who knew Smith before she was Anna Nicole. (The subject of the film is, perhaps significantly, never interviewed.) The documentary was originally broadcast over the Showtime cable network. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen concocted this stylish screwball comedic amalgam of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. Tim Robbins stars as Norville Barnes, a dull-wit from Muncie, Indiana who wrangles a job with the big Hudsucker Industries. He has a singular idea for a new children's toy that he wants to present to corporate executive Sidney J. Mussberger (Paul Newman). As he makes his way up to Mussberger's office, the company president Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) is on his way down -- through the window of the forty-fourth floor boardroom! Hudsucker's death sets off a panic that Mussberger sees as an opportunity for taking over the company -- by installing a total incompetent in Hudsucker's place and devaluing the stock. When Barnes stumbles into Mussberger's office, Mussberger sees his pigeon and appoints Barnes as the new company president. The only problem is that the new product Barnes proposes for the company, the Hula Hoop, turns out to be a tremendous success, and Mussberger has difficulty manipulating his new corporate president. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

The further misadventures of bumbling Los Angeles police Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) are chronicled in this third installment in the popular Naked Gun comedy series. This by-the-numbers entry begins with Drebin as a happily retired house-husband called back into action when an evil terrorist organization threatens Los Angeles. As in the other Naked Gun films, this plot is merely an excuse for an unhinged, rapid-fire succession of gags, ranging from satirical lampoons of cop movies to broad slapstick, all played with a perfectly straight face. Nielsen provides his familiar combination of complete witlessness and oblivious dignity as Drebin, and the film attempts to match the earlier Naked Gun films -- and the Police Squad! television series that inspired them -- in the number of jokes. However, the film proved less successful than its predecessors, as some viewers found that the freewheeling comic style of the earlier films had solidified into its own formula, now mildly entertaining but disappointingly predictable. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide
