Ben Silverstone Movies

A young British actor of enormous potential, Ben Silverstone first impressed international audiences with his portrayal of Steven Carter, a 16-year-old struggling to come out of the closet in Get Real (1998). First discovered at the age of 13 by Mike Figgis, who cast him in the major role of a young schoolboy in The Browning Version (1994), Silverstone next appeared as the young Humbert Humbert in Adrian Lyne's 1997 adaptation of Lolita. The young actor's work in Simon Shore's Get Real won him great recognition on the transatlantic art house circuit and gay and lesbian film scene, and helped to establish him as a very promising talent. Following the making of Get Real, Silverstone put acting on hold to fulfill potential of another sort: in 1998 he began his degree course in English at Trinity College, Cambridge. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

The lies, secrets, and deceit build to a head at the school's commencement ceremony, where John is to be presented a prize for athletics, while Steven reads his award-winning essay on growing up. Forty-three years after the first screen treatment of Terence Rattigan's play about a teacher facing the end of his career, Albert Finney takes on the role of Mr. Crocker-Harris, the Latin teacher forced into early retirement by a heart condition. After teaching in a public school for twenty years, Crocker-Harris is being put out to pasture in a less stressful job teaching English to foreigners. Meanwhile, his home life is also falling apart: his wife (Greta Scacchi) is having an affair with the American chemistry teacher (Matthew Modine), who nevertheless admires Crocker-Harris for his dignity and decency. Through it all, Crocker-Harris hides his pain behind his stiff British reserve. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
