Til Schweiger Movies
Handsome German actor
Til Schweiger was voted one of the Most Erotic Male Actors in a 2000 poll in Germany's Cinema magazine. After his film debut in the comedy
Manta, Manta, he won an award for Best Young Actor at the 1993 Max Ophüls Festival. He has since built up acting credits in dozens of German and international movies, in addition to work as a writer, director, and producer. On the small screen, he has appeared on some of Germany's most popular TV series and appeared as himself on Pop 2000. After his first starring role in
Maybe...Maybe Not in 1994, he stuck with comedies until he found a place for himself in action-thrillers and dramas. He combined genres for the road movie
Knockin' on Heaven's Door in 1997; he co-authored the screenplay and won an award from the Moscow Film Festival for his lead performance. The next year he stayed behind the scenes to direct Der Eisbär (The Polar Bear). Returning to acting, he quickly gained international appeal with
Bandyta and eventually ended up in Hollywood for small roles in
The Replacement Killers,
Judas Kiss, and
SLC Punk. He went on to star in the comedy
Magicians, the action-thriller
Driven, and
What to Do in Case of Fire. In 2003, he stuck with Hollywood for U-Boat, Sea Devils, and Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life: Tomb Raider 2. Over the coming years, Schweiger would continue to remain active on screen, appearing in films like Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and Inglorious Basterds. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

With an approach that recalls such outings as Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), Til Schweiger's zany farce 1 1/2 Knights - In Search of the Ravishing Princess Herzelinde concerns two knights who set out on a heroic mission, to rescue the kidnapped Princess Herzelinde. This comedy from Germany follows the misadventures of three senior citizens with an unusual plan to finance one last spree. Carla (Christel Okras), Beta (Christel Peters), and Lilli (Elisabeth Scherer) are three elderly women who have known each other since childhood and remain the best of friends. While their golden years have not been especially kind to them -- Lilly feels cramped living with her family, Beta shares a house with her ungrateful son who demands she pay part of the rent, and Carla is stuck in an old-age home -- the three women have been saving their money and plan to take a cruise around the world together. They've nearly reached their goal when they decide that hiding the money at home isn't safe, so they go to a bank to deposit their eight thousand marks in their bank accounts. While the three women wait in line to see the teller, a team of robbers stage a heist at the bank, taking their savings along with the funds from the bank vault. The bank's manager informs the women that since the money had not been officially deposited before it was stolen, it's not covered under the bank's insurance; outraged, and aware that they might not live long enough to save another eight thousand, the ladies decide to stage a robbery of their own to recover their savings and get revenge against the bankers. Jetzt Oder Nie: Zeit Ist Geldz received its North American premiere at the 2001 Palm Springs Film Festival; the film was shown under its English title, Now or Never. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A group of bohemian intellectuals struggle to have an intelligent discussion of perhaps the world's most emotional subject in this comedy-drama from director Alan Rudolph. Edgar (Dermot Mulroney) is an artist living in Paris during the 1920s who believes that sex is a subject of vital importance, but almost no one discusses it with the gravity it deserves. With this in mind, Edgar gathers together a panel of fellow creative types at the home of a wealthy tycoon (Nick Nolte) and his oddly accented spouse (Tuesday Weld) for an evening in which they will discuss their erotic lives without self-serving wit or exaggeration. Joining Edgar for this experiment is an artist from Germany (Til Schweiger), an arrogant film director (Jeremy Davies), a self-obsessed painter (Alan Cumming) whose fey personality may cross the boundaries of Edgar's prohibition of homosexuality as a topic of conversation, and a student from England (Terrence Dashon Howard) who has attracted the eye of a lovely French girl (Julie Delpy) with whom Edgar has fallen in love. Certain that a number of profound thoughts will be shared with the group, Edgar hires a pair of stenographers to record the proceedings, but the presence of the two young and beautiful secretaries -- innocent Alice (Neve Campbell) and provocative Zoe (Robin Tunney) -- has an unexpectedly strong effect on the group. Investigating Sex had its U.S. premiere as the closing night attraction of the 2001 Seattle Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
