Summer love with incestuous implications is the focus of this classic tale of adolescent romance set in late-czarist Russia. Alexander, a handsome young medical student, is spending the summer at the estate of his cousin Sonia Cherkasov. He and Sonia have always been attracted to each other, and he has designs upon pursuing it during the visit. Count Cheraksov is suspicious of Alexander and Sonia's friendship. To throw him off, Sonia invites her Polish friend Nathalie to also stay, and then instructs Alexander to pretend he is attracted to Nathalie. Unfortunately for Sonia, Alexander soon finds that his attraction is no pretense. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This fact-filled biography of the Russian diplomat Georgi Chicherin was released in 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. Chicherin, a Russian aristocrat, was jailed in London not long after the 1917 Revolution. Lenin gets him released and puts him in charge of foreign relations for the new USSR. Chicherin soon finds himself in Italy, hobnobbing with the likes of Lloyd George and the King of Italy (quite a contrast to his stay in prison). Involved in the first signing of a peace accord with Germany, Chicherin has to follow orders even if he personally does not agree with the accord. But at the same time, he put all his efforts into obtaining the accord, and in so doing breaks the diplomatic blockade of his now Communist homeland. Chicherin's career unfolds against a tumultuous historical backdrop. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A marriage of convenience that turns into a marriage of two people in love is the focus of this melodrama set during World War II. The story begins in Central Asia where Igor (Igor Kostolevsky) has been sent, along with his theatrical troupe, to entertain and distract people and soldiers from the larger war. Olga (Natalia Belokhvostikova) is working as a nurse in the local clinic and awakens the sympathy of Igor once he learns that she is suffering from malaria. The two strike up a friendship, then Igor finds out that married couples are allowed back into Moscow. In order to help cure Olga's malarial attacks, Igor talks her into a marriage of convenience, and she reluctantly agrees, thereby setting the stage for the possibility of their impending romance to begin. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
