A handful of immigrants make a bittersweet pilgrimage back to the land of their birth in this comedy drama. Ten people who have little in common beyond the fact they were all originally from Puerto Rico and now live in New York discover they've won a contest giving them each a free, all-expenses paid vacation -- in Puerto Rico. While some are eager to visit the place they once called home, others are nervous about what they will find and wary about confronting the people and things they left behind. The travelers include Carlotta, who has become a successful businesswoman and philanthropist; Daisy and Baldo, who would like to return to Puerto Rico when they retire, but aren't sure they want to be so far from their daughter, who loves New York City; Chris, who has thoroughly assimilated into Anglo culture (including an Anglo wife) and isn't sure he wants to see Puerto Rico again; Rodolfo, who still pines for the love he left behind; young and attractive Sara; and Matilde and Clotilde, two elderly sisters who have been all but forgotten by their family. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Economics and gender politics create the backdrop for this black comedy from Puerto Rico. When the manager of a tuna-canning plant in Puerto Rico is found dead in his office, police begin an investigation to determine who is responsible. Officials soon discover there were more than a few people with reason to be angry with the man overseeing the plant -- the cannery was soon to be closed, putting all his employees out of work, while the manager was juggling both a wife and a mistress (and the plant's janitor also had eyes for the boss' other woman). Sudor Amargo stars Domingo Quinones, Sonia Valentin, Alba Nydia Diaz, and Yamaris Latorre. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Three stories of rural life by Abelardo Diaz Alfaro, popularized on Puerto Rican radio in the 1940s, are gathered together in this anthology film. As in the radio dramas they are based on, they are tied together by the narrative supplied by Don Teyo Gracia (Juan Ortíz Jiménez). In the first story, "Don Procopio El Despedidor De Duelos," an undertaker's uncanny good cheer is shown to be overlaid with a pure certainty of his own eventual demise. In the second, "Peyo Mercé Enseña Inglés" a schoolteacher regrets that he is required to teach his students so much English that their progress in Spanish is hindered. In the third, "Bagazo," an elderly canecutter's eloquent pleas do not prevent him from being laid off by the new field boss. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
