Myakisev (Vladimir Steklov) lives in an overpopulated apartment that has stoves that he believes are poisoning his neighbors. A young man realizes his father may not have been the man he thought in this Russian-Kazakhstan production, which screened out-of-competition at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. The film's title character (Farkhat Abdraimov) leads a life of happy oblivion as a restaurant manager until the day his father is murdered, triggering a deeper investigation of his family friends and connections. The hectic, materialistic lives of Russian nouveau riche provide the framework for this Russian thriller. The two protagonists, Ivan and Misha are two rubes who came to Moscow to participate in the perestroika economic boom. They are definitely limitas, Russian for hicks. Ivan becomes a wealthy computer code-breaker. The story really begins when he is given a disk to decode. It is an incredibly difficult code to break. Just as he is breaking it, he discovers that the code was set by Misha who is a technical specialist for a bank. Wanting to protect his friend he stops the decoding program. Because Misha is the only one with the disk key, Ivan's action accidently causes him to be killed. Ivan seeks revenge but when he discovers that the information on the disk has involved him he becomes bitter and cynical. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this cutting though sometimes slow-paced study of children and their ability to be cruel, director Rolan Bykov focuses the eye of the camera on the experiences of a young girl, Lena (Kristina Orbakaite). When the 12-year-old Lena moves into a new town with her grandfather, they are both ostracized because they are different. He is crotchety and eccentric, a collector of old paintings, and she is too shy and anxious to please the usual friends. When she is blamed for something she did not do, the children decide to go after her with a vengeance -- and that is when the cruelty escalates.
