A joint project of the CBC TV network and the Raido-Canada service, this ambitious documentary series traced the History of Canada literally from the beginning--15,000 BC, to be exact. The subsquent episodes were nothing if not ambitious, covering the progress of the Dominion right up to 1850 AD. The seventeenth and final episode, covering the years 1976 to 1990, was open-ended enough to bear the title "In An Uncertain World". Three years in the making, the series utilized interviews, rare photographs, precious paintings and etchings, and vividly dramatic re-enactments. Telecast in English and French versions, Canada: A People's History ran from October 22, 2000 to November 18, 2001, yielding such ancillary projects as a two-volume book, a website, and a bestselling CD. ~ All Movie Guide

Montreal director Charles Biname (Eldorado) and novelist Monique Proulx used actor improvs as a basis for this screenplay look at life in Montreal. Unhappy Louise (Pascale Montpetit) can't connect with her career-minded sister Paulette (Anne-Marie Cadieux). To make matters worse, her lover Julien (Guy Nadon) is a married father with little time to spend seeing Louise -- so she takes to the streets, informing people at random that her services are available for exactly 60 minutes. Some talk away their hour, while others desire sex. One couple want Louise to play doctor-nurse with them, and a middle-aged woman has her dispose of a dead pet. Unemployed and strapped with the responsibility of a family to feed, Dominique is forced to pretend he is a homosexual so he can get a good job working with a gay antique dealer. This Canadian comedy follows him as he tries to orient himself into the gay subculture while his wife is on vacation. Fortunately, his best friend is around to pretend to be his boyfriend and bolster his spirits. When Dominique's wife returns and discovers gay-themed items around the house, including a whole closet full of clothing for the nightclubs, she immediately jumps to conclusions and throws Dominique out. Professor Larsen, the director of the International Center for Astro Monitoring is listening to radio transmissions from deep space when he receives a disturbing string of code, that to him heralds the coming of alien invaders. When thousands of people suddenly disappear from the red-light district known as Sepulveda, his worst fears are confirmed. To prove that aliens are behind the mayhem, he is sent there to investigate. Larsen is assisted by his lab helper Oscar, his bodyguard Stavro and by Eva, the beautiful daughter of a politically powerful hermaphrodite named Purpur. Strongly evocative of an old film noir but punctuated with '90s style violence, this dark Canadian detective drama centers on a renegade ex-police detective who tries to find the identity of the enigmatic man who has been threatening his life. High strung, edgy Detective Marceau loses his job with the Montreal police department when while walking through a darkened train yard filled with abandoned cars, he observes a department colleague tooting up with a pair of coke dealers in a battered caboose. Something inside Marceau snaps and without flinching he shoots all three in cold blood. Afterward, he quits the force. Six months pass and he wanders by the academy one day. There he spies Camile, a cop-in-training who cannot bear to use a gun. He decides to help her accept the violence inherent in policework; in exchange he wants her to act as his body guard while he tries to find the would be killer. His main suspect is a psychopathic child molester, Boule de Pool. Meanwhile Marceau and Camile begin to get closer until their passion violently erupts in the caboose one night. Native Americans clash with the Canadian government as they struggle for independence in this factual Canadian drama set in Quebec during the summer of 1990. Eddie Laroche, a rebellious native leader spawned a national crises when he and his supporters declared the independence of Aki territory in a far-flung area of northern Quebec. He refused to negotiate without the presences of television cameras to record his people's plight. Jean Fontaine was the reporter assigned to the story and much of the film is told from his viewpoint. To reach Laroche's land, negotiators, government officials, and the film crew had to travel by boat. Fontaine is initially cynical and reluctant to do the story, but after he spends time on the boat interviewing it's passengers, his cynicism has dissolves and he realizes he is faced with the presentations of a terribly complex situation. He is driven to daydream and meditate upon them as his birthday approaches.
