Tarcisio Meira Movies
This Brazilian film, which presents the dilemma of impoverished Brazilian street kids, is a strange mixture of social commentary and soft-core eroticism. It is particularly interesting in that it has no named director and is actually compiled from several other sources. They include a Brazilian film "Boca de ouro", a local documentary, and clips from "Wild Orchid." The basic plot is based upon the filmed report of JJ, a U.S. TV reporter, who describes her experiences in Brazil. She tells how she and her ex-lover Reb, a photographer, were searching for the truth about the death-squads roving around slaughtering street urchins. She ends up interviewing gold toothed Boca, a vicious crime lord from the slums, who battles the businessmen behind the killings. They have the children killed because they drive away potential customers. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Boca de Ouro is a Brazilian gangster who has had all his teeth pulled out and replaced with golden ones as an announcement of his power and ruthlessness. In this story, based on a 1959 play by Nelson Rodrigues, chronicles the swath he cuts through Brazilian society: his power puts him on a par with the elite, and his background makes him very crude indeed. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

- Tarcisio Meira
The life of the "banker" (Rogerior Samora)of an illegal gambling syndicate is the focus of this high-profile Brazilian production. Though these syndicates for the game jogo do bicho operate in ways very much resembling the U.S.'s mafioso, from the banker's perspective, the only thing of consequence in his life is his relationship with his girlfriend (arcella Praddo). Cameo appearances by soccer great Pele and Brazilian TV stars Jose Wilker, Tarcisio Meira and others enliven this drama, which is of particular interest to those familiar with current Brazilian popular culture. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Brazilian erotic exercise stars Sonia Braga and Paulo Cesar Pereio as lovers who aren't in love. Attracted to each other's all-stops-out sexuality, Braga and Pereio use one another in every sense of the word. It is only at fadeout time that they learn to their surprise that they have genuinely fallen for each other. Though it shies away from closeups, I Love You is about as hard-core as it's possible to get in a mainstream film. Originally titled Eu Te Amo, I Love You made its American debut sans a rating of any kind -- "X" or otherwise. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sonia Braga, Paulo Cesar Pereio, (more)
Based on a play by Nelson Rodrigues, the Kiss turns like a whirlwind around one innocent act: after an accident, a dying man is kissed by another man, out of compassion -- but this unusual gesture violates an ingrained social taboo that colors everyone's perception of what exactly happened. The man, Arandir Tarcisio Meira is hauled off to prison by corrupt police, and while he remains incarcerated, a journalist picks up the story and becomes obsessed with showing him up as a homosexual. The journalist himself is hardly a paradigm of mental stability, being tormented by the memory of how he had let his own son drown without doing anything to help him. His attacks ruin Arandir's life and when he finally gets out of prison, there is almost nowhere to turn. Arandir's father-in-law, with his own demons driving him to action, perceives him as the cause of his problems, and sees him as a way to exorcise his own inner torment. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Brazilian director Glauber Rocha has come up with a confusing socio-political film, a visual and musical collage that bombards the senses. Opening scenes show Native Brazilians dancing in a frenzy, and then those scenes fade into a wild Mardi Gras carnival. After this introduction, two opposing politicos and sensuous, flamboyant women present visual contrasts as a historian comments on the history of the country. In the background is the modern city of Brazilia, a fitting setting for this kaleidoscope of images. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
