Controversial Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berluscoi is just one of the targets of writer and director Nanni Moretti's satiric focus in this sharp comedy-drama. In the 1970's, Bruno (Silvio Orlando) was one of Italy's most daring and best-respected filmmakers, while his wife Paola (Margherita Buy) was a leading box-office star. However, come the new millennium, things are a whole lot different for Bruno -- Paola is divorcing him, his production company is on the verge of bankruptcy, and he can't get a new project off the ground. When Teresa (Jasmine Trinca), a young woman down on her luck, approaches Bruno with a script, he agrees to take on the project, even though he hasn't read it and doesn't know how he'll raise the money. Bruno discovers he's put himself in hot water when he reads the screenplay and discovers it's a frontal assault on Silvio Berluscoi that doesn't shy away from allegations of his connection to organized crime, tax evasion, bribery and influence peddling. While Italian firms won't dare touch the project, Bruno discovers a Polish financier (Jerzy Stuhr) who will put up the money, but under one condition -- Bruno has to persuade box-office idol Marco Pulici (Michele Placidio) to play Berluscoi. Il Caimano (aka The Caiman) received its North American premier at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Rejected by her fellow countrymen and left to fend for herself in an unfamiliar land, a twelve-year-old Iraqi refugee living in Rome recounts her remarkable journey through the bars of a remote and undisclosed prison. Back in Iraq, young Rahil's guardians would frequently argue, and the local bullies were relentless. Yet regardless of her dire circumstances, optimistic Rahil never lost hope that a better future was just around the corner. Years ago, Rahil's country was consumed by strife, and she was forced to travel the desert with armed Arab men. Later, one of her protectors had a business deal that ended in violence and Rahil was forced to flee. As she wandered the outskirts of home, she would seek out the assistance of fellow countrymen who shunned her upon learning her father's name. When authorities eventually catch up to Rahil her story is revealed, though she is still left a stranger in a strange land. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Shot in the thick Italian street dialect of coastal town Bari, located roughly at the heel of that peninsula, this postmodern indie crime comedy was helmed by first time director Alessandro Piva. When a Balkan mule stuffs a bag of cocaine down a train's toilet after a handoff goes bad, the race is on to find the missing drugs, located somewhere along the railroad tracks. Crime boss Nino (Mimmo Mancini), who has a passion for driving around listening to cheesy dance music, sends out a couple of his dense henchmen, Minuicchio (Dino Abbrescia) and Pasquale (Paolo Sassanelli), to look for the package, while Pinuccio waits for them at the club, along with Sabino. Meanwhile, two space cadets happen upon the highly-sought-after item. This film was screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Italian filmmaker Gianni Zanasi's sophomore effort is this fanciful coming-of-age drama. Fifteen-year-old Andrea (Andrea Corneti) lives in a world of his own, in which a casual friendship with a pretty young girl gets blown up in his mind into an epic romance. He invites her for a romantic weekend to visit a motor show in nearby Bologna, but she fails to show up at the bus station. Instead, his older sister Stefania -- who's planning an amorous getaway herself with her beau Angelo -- appears and Andrea tags along. At Bologna, Andrea passes himself off as the son of a Formula One driver, while Stefania wonders whether or not she should go all the way with Angelo. A Domani was screened at the 1999 Venice Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
