Though the upcoming "Master of Mahjong" tournament offers the prospect of big money and even greater fame, the pair finds their once perfect plan going to pot when West is kidnapped by some scheming opponents with a plan of their own. Hong Kong filmmaker Allen Lan directs the martial arts-action film Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger, which, despite its similar title and sharing some of the same actors, has nothing to do with Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Set during the Ming dynasty, the story involves horse thief Luk Ching-Yang (Sammo Hung) and his wife Liu Lu-Yian (Cheng Pei-Pei). After Luk was betrayed by his brother Kiu Hung (Tsui Goh), Lu-Yian left him. While being followed by nebbish journalist Bob (Michael Chow Man-kin) and coping with their own personal issues, the three are being targeted by Andy, a crazed arms-dealer who is seeking vengeance on Charlie for the death of his wife following a particularly ugly FBI raid years previous. Action director Tony Leung Siu-hung helms this Lethal Weapon inspired action yarn starring Jade Leung Ching as Jade Leung, a tough-as-nails Hong Kong cop with strong suicidal tendencies. Sent to Singapore as a part of a joint police effort with the FBI to bust a weapons ring, Jade is paired up with fellow cop Ellen (Anita Lee Yuen-wah). Together they manage to recruit the head gangster's lawyer as an informant. Director Stephen Shin Kei-yin follows up on his La Femme Nikita knock-off Black Cat with this sequel inspired in part by Terminator 2. In this go around, Erica (Jade Leung) is outfitted with a new computer chip in her brain that not only turns her into a remorseless killer cyborg, but also provides her superiors an "off" switch which can be flipped remotely. After being paired up with another killer named Robin (Robin Shou Wan-bo), she set out to hunt down and wipe out the nefarious Anti-Yeltsin Organization, a band of terrorists set on killing Russia's frequently drunken presidential strongman. Several of the terrorists have imbibed a special radioactive concoction to improve their fighting prowess. Fortunately, Erica's improved senses can quickly pick up on the exotic chemicals coursing through the baddies' bodies. Explosions, ski chases, and fight scenes in a steel mill ensue. Following up on his vampire gangster flick A Bite of Love, Stephen Shin Kei-yin spins this knock off of Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita. The film centers on young wayward lass named Erica (Jade Leung), who escapes from police custody just before her court date. She is eventually hunted down by a secret government agency, whereupon she has a computer device, which improves her physical abilities, implanted in her skull. She is then forced to endure spy boot camp where she becomes schooled in all manners of killing people. While doing her first hit, her crime is captured by a wildlife photographer named Allen (Thomas Lam Cho-fai). Instead of icing the guy immediately, she falls for him. Soon her relationship with the agency becomes strained when Allen figures out what his new girlfriend does for a living. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi
