A handful of teenagers take up crime for fun and profit in this gritty drama with comic elements from Mexico. Taciturn Negus (Gabino Rodriguez), softhearted Chale (Juan Pablo de Santiago), aggressive Sapo (Angel Sosa) and tomboy Chata (Paulina Avalos) are four teenagers who live in a run-down urban neighborhood in Mexico. Most days, their biggest project is simply finding something to do; between regular rounds of skateboarding, pot smoking and simply hanging out, the four are bored and looking for excitement as well as a sense of purpose. As it happens, all of them could use some extra money, and when someone suggests they plan a robbery of the local movie theater, all four are up for the challenge. The friends plot a surprisingly elaborate heist and turn out to be better criminals than anyone would have expected. However, when money comes into the picture, the relationship between the teenagers begins to change, and their big adventure makes problems for them that have nothing to do with the police. Asalto Al Cine (aka The Cinema Hold-Up) was the first dramatic feature from director Iria Gomez Conchiero. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A spiritual journey takes a strange and disturbing turn in this drama from Mexican filmmaker Rodrigo Pla. In 1928, Mexico is in a state of political overthrow, with government forces reacting with savage violence against anyone they imagine may harbor revolutionary sympathies. After Elias (Mario Zaragoza) and his wife become parents of a baby boy, their attempt to travel into town to have the child baptized is mistaken for the advance of rebel troops, and soon their village is raised by military police. As Elias and his family run for their lives, he is visited by a vision of the Lord, who condemns him for putting his children and neighbors in harm's way, and Elias is convinced he must atone. Elias leads his family into the desert and he begins building a church, convinced this is the only way he can redeem his family in the eyes of God. But it soon becomes obvious Elias's children do not share his convictions, and the father's devotion begins to resemble madness. Javier Fox's drama Fuera del cielo (AKA Beyond Heaven, 2006) spans a 24-hour period. It begins at 6am with young Cucú, who is greeted by the return of his brother Malboro after a five-year separation. The brothers unite and embark on a long journey to the locales inhabited by their relatives, and wrap at 6am the following morning. The theme of Fox's film is "orphanhood," not in the literal sense (where children lose their parents to death) but in the abstract sense - the sense in which individuals can easily fall out of touch with their family ties. That estrangement brings to Cucú and Malboro a sense of social disconnectedness that causes a great deal of inner pain, pain they must strive to overcome. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
