A nameless bachelor finds his life overtaken by a chatty female in Elling director Peter Næss's wry meditation on modern romance. The protagonist (Trond Fausa Aurvåg) is a lethargic man who maintains his harmonious existence by working during the day, and staring at his apartment walls by night. One day, seemingly out of nowhere, the reserved bachelor finds his life invaded by mysterious redhead Marianne (Marian Saastad Ottesen). A talkative woman who seems to be able to speak ad nauseam about any topic that pops into her head, Marianne continues to chatter as her exhausted partner in conversation slowly drifts off into dreamland. When he awakens to find Marianne making a soulful confession about a childhood trauma, his fate is sealed by his genuine sympathy. The following day, Marianne returns with a dozen boxes and a rather substantial yellow dresser. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Based on a short story by noted Norwegian writer Oystein Lonn, Thranes Metode/Thrane's Method concerns the slowly developing attraction between two people living in the same apartment building. Thrane (Bjorn Sundquist) has money but no job, and has spent much of his life drifting from one place to another. He's infatuated with his upstairs neighbor, a jazz fan named Molly (Petronella Barker), despite the fact that she's married. However, her husband is frequently gone, and, with time, Molly finds herself drawn to Thrane, as well. Thranes Metode/Thrane's Method boasts a soundtrack of classic Charles Mingus sides (thanks to Molly's admirable taste in music) and received its American premier at the 1999 New Directors/New Films showcase in New York; it was also screened at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

They then show him a nude picture of Diana and Markus falls head-over-heels in love. On a whim, Markus decides to write Mortensen. Thinking she wouldn't bother responding to someone so young, he pretends he is a wealthy millionaire. Sure enough she writes back and a friendship results. Markus couldn't be happier until he learns that she has been released from the show and is planning to return to Norway. To make matters worse, she is just dying to meet him. Irony abounds in this comical Norwegian story of two comedians married to each other. At first husband Stig is the star, a stand-up comic noted for his bawdy monologues and cutting remarks about his many friends and acquaintances. He loves his career and has a great time until the terrible night that his greatest fan, a stuffy insurance broker laughs himself to death in the audience. After that poor Stig cannot perform without seeing the broker's face staring back. Naturally this impacts his humor. His wife and manger Ane, who is also a talented singer blessed with an even raunchier sense of humor than his, takes over as his opening act. Soon she becomes the main attraction. Meanwhile the still traumatized Stig stays at home playing with his toy trains and hangs out with his depressed father-in-law who came to stay after he learned that his wife had an affair 50 years ago. Ane is also having an affair with a handsome drummer, more in retaliation for Stig's many indiscretions than out of any real lust. The many goings on are punctuated by asides made directly to the audience. This film will be most enjoyable for those who speak Norwegian as much of the subtlest humor is lost in the literally translated subtitles. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

One morning, Andersen discovers that the amount of household trash he has to dispose of is more than his apartment building's receptacle can accommodate. He tries to find a waste bin in a neighboring building which has room for the offending plastic bag full of yucky stuff, but he has no success. Eventually, he tosses it over the hedge onto the street. Unfortunately for him, at that very moment a burglar's getaway car is careening down the street, pursued by the police. He is immediately in trouble with both the burglars and the police and must somehow handle this situation clad initially in only his bathrobe, as he had set out to get rid of the garbage before dressing. In this comedy, Andersen is a model of cool unflappability, despite the absurd situations he finds himself in. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
