A son leans more than expected about his father in the wake of his violent death in this drama from Brazil. Antonio (Bernardo Marinho) is the son of a wealthy banker, Mauro (Antonio Calloni), but has little interest in following in his dad's footsteps. Antonio is a college man studying filmmaking, and doesn't have much interest in Mauro's staid life in finance, while Mauro is wary of his son's seeming lack of interest in women, though he's mistaken Antonio's shyness for apathy. Antonio discovers some paperwork which suggests his father may be guilty of legal improprieties relating to his business, but before he can confront Mauro, the banker is found dead along a busy highway, and the police suspect foul play. Antonio's mother Angela (Giulia Gam) is distraught at the news, and as he tries to comfort her, Antonio is forced to take over the family's affairs. As Antonio goes through their accounts, he suspects his father's business misdeeds may be connected to his death. While Antonio struggles to determine the truth behind his father's death, he encounters Carmen (Carolina Ferraz), a beautiful woman who knew Mauro and may have shared a ride with him on his fateful night. Through Carmen, Antonio learns about his father's reckless early life and his way with the ladies, which inspires Antonio to gather his courage and try to make time with two of his more attractive classmates, Cristina (Luiza Mariani) and Adriana (Luana Carvalho). A man in his early twenties starts thinking about his future and where the woman he loves will figure into it in this romantic comedy-drama from Brazil. It's a cool and rainy night, and Carlos (Murilo Benicio) is waiting outside a movie theater for his girlfriend Julia (Carolina Ferraz) to show up for their date. As Carlos starts to think he's been stood up, his mind wanders, and he finds himself imagining three different scenarios of how Julia might fit into his future. In one, Carlos is a businessman who is married, though not very happily, to a woman named Maria (Beth Goulart). One day, Carlos happens to run into his former girlfriend Julia, and he's soon tempted into infidelity. But does Carlos have the courage to leave Maria and start his life over with Julia? In another daydream, Carlos and Julia were married, but he divorced her when he came out of the closet after falling in love with Pedro (Emilio de Mello). Pedro and Carlos are very happy together, much to the annoyance of Julia, who goes out of her way to make things difficult for her former husband and his new lover. And finally, Carlos imagines himself an overgrown adolescent layabout who still lives with his mom (Irene Ravache) and seems incapable of handling a long-term relationship, though that doesn't stop him from seducing as many women as his circumstances allow. Carlos is urged to consult a computer dating service in hopes of finding a woman he can settle down with; Carlos gives it a try, and discovers his first match is none other that his significant other from college, Julia. This Brazilian film by auteur Carlos Reichenbach offers a lush, at times surreal, collage that pays tribute to the arts and presents his personal experiences and political insights as it examines the youthful memories of two close friends. Torres and Xavier are old friends who have recently published a volume of poetry. Their celebration in a rundown pastry bar becomes the framework for their reminiscences. The story frequently jumps from past to present. Their friendship began in 1957. They next remember the 60's where they discovered loving and shared a passion for movies. In the present, Anesia, a prostitute arrives and causes Torres to remember the time her pimp forced him to play her date as she visited her parents. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
