An act of revenge takes an unexpected turn in this psychological drama from French writer and director Lola Doillon. Anna (Kristin Scott Thomas) flees a house on the outskirts of Paris and returns home, careful to tell no one where she's been or what she's been doing. The next day, after an ordinary day of work as an OB-GYN, Anna stops at a police station and reports that she had been kidnapped. Years before, she has performed a cesarean section on a woman who did not survive, and the patient's Yann (Pio Marmai), driven mad by grief, abducted Anna and intended to punish her for the death of his wife and child. However, after spending several days together in Yann's basement, he and Anna discovered their contempt for one another was giving way to more complex emotions, which complicate both of their senses of justice. Contre Toi (aka In Your Hands) was an official selection at the 2010 BFI London Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lola Doillon's French-language comedy-drama Et toi, t'es sur qui? (AKA Just About Love?, 2007) unfolds at that critical juncture for a group of tightly-knit teenage friends - the moment when each individual considers giving to another the part of himself or herself that can never be retracted. Thus, Julie (Christa Theret), Vincent (Gaël Tavares), Elodie (Lucie Desclozeau) and Nicolas (Nicolas Schweri) each face the prospect of not only crossing the one-way bridge from adolescence into adulthood, but making the irreversible leap from "friends" to "lovers" with one another, as the last summer after high school lingers before them. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A not-so-worldly twentysomething gets caught up with some shady Parisians in director Cedric Klapisch's 2003 crime comedy-drama Not for or Against. Wallflower camerawoman Caty (Marie Gillain) is three years into her career and residency in the French capital with little to show for it in the friend category, never mind the fact she is hopelessly single. While on the job filming an interview with a prostitute, Caty gets a tip from the hooker for a quick and profitable money-making possibility. Following up on the lead, Caty meets the handsome Jean (Vincent Elbaz) who offers to pay her to film him while he robs a store. After some perfunctory soul-searching, Caty impetuously decides to take the offer. This start in crime leads her into Jean's gang of criminals, which she rather quickly becomes a member of. As the thieves tend to spend their loot about as quickly as they accumulate it, they begin planning an enormous caper that will enable them to live more comfortably -- if they manage to survive its undertaking. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Raja (Najat Benssallem) is a 19-year-old Moroccan girl. An orphan, she's led a difficult life, but has gotten off the streets and lives with her cousin Nadira (Ilham Abdelwahad) and her family. Raja and Nadira are happy to get low-paying jobs working in the garden of a wealthy middle-aged Frenchman, Fred (Pascal Greggory). Fred is immediately attracted to the new girl and the other girls tease Raja about his interest, encouraging her to go after his money. Fred discusses his growing infatuation with his two elderly cooks, Oum El Aid (Oum El Aid Ait Youss) and Zineb (Zineb Ouchita), who try to discourage his interest. Because they don't speak the same language, Fred and Raja often have to rely on others to translate as they dance around each other. Fred hires Raja to be his maid, and flirts shamelessly with her. She's intrigued, and desperate to change her life, but she keeps him at a distance, uncertain of the seriousness of his interest. Raja has a boyfriend, Youssef (Hassan Khissal), who resents her relationship with the Frenchman; in addition, her brother (Abdelilah Lamrani), who pimped her out as a girl, still tries to control her life, taking a share of the money she earns. He plans for her to marry a policeman he knows. Fred struggles with his emotions. They obviously feel something for each other, but the cultural and economic differences between them may be too immense to overcome. Raja, written and directed by Jacques Doillon (Ponette), was shown at the 2003 New York Film Festival. Benssallem won the Marcello Mastroianni Award (for best first performance) at the 2003 Venice Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Xavier (Romain Duris) is a French economics student who is nearing the completion of his degree and is looking for work. Upon his arrival, Xavier moves into a large house shared by a large group of students from all over Europe. Xavier finds that his ideas and attitudes are challenged in a positive way by the diverse personalities of his housemates, and that his loyalty to Martine is tested by his attraction to Anne-Sophie (Judith Godrèche), a sweet but lonesome woman from France who has been away from her husband for too long. After a visit, most of Xavier's roommates decide they don't much care for Martine and Xavier gets advice on seducing Anne-Sophie from an unexpected source -- Isabelle (Cécile de France), a footloose lesbian living in the house. The ways of love are often difficult to fathom, but the love of a woman for the man who kicked her boyfriend's butt over unpaid debts is a new avenue of romance explored in this French comedy-drama. Fred (Lou Doillon) is a woman in her early twenties who is dating Francois (Camille Clavel), a young man who has made the serious mistake of getting behind in his payments to his drug dealer, Alex (Guillaume Saurrel). One day, Alex decides things have gone too far, and he arrives at Francois and Fred's place to beat him up. For some reason, Fred enjoys watching Alex slap her boyfriend around, and she quickly finds herself infatuated with Alex. Seeing that Fred is already involved with Francois, she feels it might seem unseemly to approach him directly, so instead she fixes Alex up with her close friend Sylvia (Caroline Ducey), and the two couples spend the evening together as Fred puts her matchmaking skills to the test. Lou Doillon, who plays Fred, is the daughter of Carrement a L'ouest's director Jacques Doillon; her mother is noted singer and actress Jane Birkin. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Jacques Doillon's films tend to swing between studies of hysterical characters and explorations of youth. Petits frères belongs to the second category, but with a difference. Unlike some of his other work, such as Jeune Werther, this film is set in the poor suburbs. Thirteen-year old Talia is having problems with her stepfather, so she escapes with her dog in the direction of Pantin, where she hopes to find her friends. But they have already been placed in a home. The only people she meets are four boys who win her confidence and then steal her dog. She is so desperate to find Kim that she is ready to do anything. In her search for her dog, she discovers solidarity. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

This unique French offering is a compilation of 30 short films focused on AIDS. The mini-films were based on over 3,000 ideas put in by French school children and were made by filmmakers on a voluntary basis. Most of the vignettes deal with heterosexuality and AIDS, but one deals with drug-usage, and one with homosexuality. It took four production houses three years to create this inspirational and informative film. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
