An ordinary guy gets himself in an extraordinary amount of trouble in this blend of comedy and action from director Ian Fitzgibbon. Michael McCrea (Cillian Murphy) is a regular guy who isn't especially good with money, which leads him to borrow some money from Perrier (Brendan Gleeson), a local loan shark and strong-arm man. Unfortunately, Michael isn't able to pay back the money on schedule, and he quickly learns that Perrier is one man you don't want angry; now there's a price on Michael's head and he needs to pay his debt quickly if he wants to live. Michael accepts a proposal from a small-time hood to do a quick breaking-and-entering job in exchange for part of the loot, but things go very wrong and somehow the neighbor girl Michael is sweet on, Brenda (Jodie Whittaker), ends up shooting someone. Now Michael is on the run from two sets of crooks, has a dead body to deal with, must find an alibi for Brenda, and has to mend fences with his crusty father (Jim Broadbent) before his dad is willing to help. The fragile façade of an outwardly normal and happy family is gradually broken down after a reprehensible act of sexual violence leaves a young girl forever changed. From the appearance of their elegant home in the suburbs of Dublin, the Cahills seem to be the picture of happiness. Young Emma has recently begin to follow her father Aidan and her mother Michelle into the world of modeling, and in order to celebrate Emma's twenty-first birthday party her parents have arranged a lavish party. As the big day draws near, it's gradually revealed that husband and wife lead separate lives, and that both seem more interested in pursuing outside relationships than focusing on their marriage. When Emma is raped on the night of her party, it remains unclear whether her emotionally fractured family will be able to fully support her. Either way, Emma refuses to remain quiet about the incident, outwardly naming her attacker and sparking what threatens to become a heated legal battle. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Two English G.I.s find themselves blamed for the widespread corruption of the War in Iraq in this timely drama. Mark (Gerard Kearns) and his friend Shane (Matthew McNulty) are a pair of British soldiers who are sent to Iraq, where they've been assigned duty as guards in a holding facility for Prisoners of War. While the official command is that the prisoners are to be treated with care and respect, Mark and Shane soon learn this isn't always the practice, and that it's considered a good thing to occasionally rough up prisoners so that their compatriots will understand not to get cross with the British. While incidents of violence and humiliation are the exception rather than the rule, that changes after the base commander is killed in a terrorist attack, and Corporal Gant (Shaun Dooley) decides the prisoners should pay for the acts of the Iraqi insurgents. Before long, random torture and abuse of the prisoners is commonplace, and when Shane returns home, he shows photos of his misdeeds to his girlfriend Shelly (Naomi Bentley). When Shelly learns that Shane has been unfaithful to her, she hands Shane's photographs of the abuse of prisoners to a reporter, and soon Shane, Mark and their comrades are at the center of an international scandal. The British military is willing to back Gant and his superiors who condoned the abuse, but they're not about to defend soldiers like Mark and Shane, and soon they've been made scapegoats for crimes they committed but did not instigate. The Mark of Cain won the "Movies that Matter" Award (a prize sponsored by the international human rights group Amnesty International) at the 2007 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A simple lie yields deadly consequences in writer/director Joe Ahearne's drama about two parents who lie about their religion to get their daughter into a high performing Catholic school. Ten year-old Lucy has just witnessed a deadly knife attack at school, and now her parents Stewart (Christopher Eccleston) and Alison (Susannah Harker) are desperate to ensure her safety. If they could only get Lucy into a respected Catholic school, Stewart and Alison could finally rest easy, but in order for that to happen they will have to lie about their religion. At first it seemed like a simple deception, but soon this little white lie will spiral into a deadly cycle of fraud, blackmail, and murder. In order to prepare for an intimidating interview with the school's tough principal (Lesley Manville), Stuart and Alison enlist the aid of a priest (David Warner) who's willing to verify their story and give young Lucy a quick lesson in Catholicism. But this crucial bit of help has a high price, and by the time Stewart discovers the priest's dark secret it may already be too late. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A troubled war veteran tries to unlock his memories of a terrible crime in this stylish thriller, the first American project for British filmmaker John Maybury. In 1991, Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) was an American soldier serving in the Persian Gulf when he was shot in the head; pronounced dead by a field surgeon, Starks somehow returned to life, though with no small number of psychological problems to show for his troubles. A year later, Starks is walking through the snowy Vermont wilderness when he discovers a woman whose truck has broken down, Jean (Kelly Lynch). Starks tries to help Jean and her young daughter, and later flags down a car for a ride into town; however, the car is being driven by a criminal on the run from the police (Brad Renfro), and not long after the car is cornered by police, Starks' memory goes blank. When he comes to, Jack is accused of killing a patrolman in the violent standoff that followed, and is told that the woman, her daughter, and the criminal existed only in his imagination. Declared insane in his murder trial, Starks is sentenced to a mental institution run by Dr. Becker (Kris Kristofferson), who seems to believe that the more brutal the treatment, the better. As Starks suffers frequent beatings and long spells in a frozen locker, his mind drifts from his harrowing past into the future, where he visits with Jackie (Keira Knightley), who once was the young girl Starks tried to help. The Jacket also features Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dr. Lorenson, a compassionate doctor who tries to help Starks and his fellow patients. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In director Johnny Gogan's deliberately paced political thriller Mapmaker, an outsider in a small Northern Irish village finds himself embroiled in a old conflict between the IRA and the local forestry department. Hired by the Northern Ireland parish of Rosveagh to prepare a tourism map, cartographer Richie Markey (Brian F. O'Byrne) sets about his task, only to find some archeological sites are in danger of being destroyed. Raising his concerns with forestry manager Robert Bates (Brendan Coyle), Markey quickly suspects something sinister lies behind the destruction when Bates brusquely ignores his pleas. Shortly thereafter, Markey learns that a previous survey team failed in mapping the region when one of its members, one Peter Nolan, disappeared after being accused of informing on a couple of IRA men that were killed in connection to a soldier's death. Despite receiving warnings to stop his work, Markey carries on until he discovers Nolan's body and comes to the rather startling conclusion that his completed map may very well solve the mystery surrounding Nolan's death. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
