As Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart) fumbles toward 30, her life becomes more tumultuous than one would have believed possible. What started out as an eccentric fantasy life in the first season has begun to swing sharply toward deeper, darker psychological troubles. Ironically, as Ally considers taking antidepressants to suppress her frequent trips into her imagination, Billy (Gil Bellows) begins to have his own hallucinations. Though the office thinks that Billy's chauvinistic behavior, newly bleached hair, and entourage of female assistants are merely his reaction to his recent divorce from Georgia (Courtney Thorne-Smith), they turn out to be the results of a fatal brain tumor. Billy's death leaves the firm reeling, and provides a wealth of opening and closing doors for its occupants. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Comedians Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence team up for a story that wouldn't appear to have many immediate humorous possibilities -- two men serving life sentences in prison for a crime they did not commit. Life opens in Harlem in 1932, where Ray Gibson (Eddie Murphy) is a small-time con man in debt to Spanky, a gangster (Rick James). Ray spots would-be bank teller Claude Banks (Martin Lawrence) at a gambling spot and, figuring him for an easy mark, lifts his wallet -- only to discover Claude is broke. Ray and Claude's mutual need to raise some cash brings them together when Spanky offers them a job bringing back a load of moonshine from bootleggers in the deep south. However, things don't go well for Ray and Claude, and they're arrested by a sheriff in Mississippi who recently killed a man and needs someone on whom he can hang the charge. Since Ray and Claude are black, from out of town and have been caught red-handed with a load of illegal liquor, the sheriff figures they're easy pickings and frames them for the murder. Soon the two men are inmates in a Southern work camp, where they spend the next 55 years learning to get along with the other inmates, avoiding the wrath of the guards, seeing younger prisoners come and go and never losing hope that someday, somehow, their innocence will be proven and they'll be released. Life is the second screen pairing for Murphy and Lawrence, who also shared screen time in 1992's Boomerang, and was scripted by Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone from an original idea by Murphy. The supporting cast includes Ned Beatty, Clarence Williams III, Bernie Mac, Nick Cassavetes and R. Lee Ermey. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Teri Garr guest stars as patient Celinda Randlett, who claims to possess the incredible power of seeing "inside" people. In other developments, everyone in the ER finds out that Carol (Julianna Margulies) is pregnant with twins; Weaver (Laura Innes) brings in an abandoned child; Benton (Eriq La Salle) gets more bad news; a teenager (Corey Parker Robinson) whom Carter (Noah Wyle) previously mentored returns as a patient; and Lucy (Kellie Martin) is becoming more and more dependent upon Ritalin. Two romances -- one new, one renewed -- cap this episode, the last of ER's fifth season. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Romano (Paul McCrane) surprises everyone when he promotes his longtime nemesis Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) to associate chief of surgery. Returning from his mother's funeral, Greene (Anthony Edwards) is plunged into an argument with Weaver (Laura Innes) over a patient who is to be resuscitated. New second-year resident Malucchi (aka "Dr. Dave," played by Erik Palladino), manages to rub the entire staff the wrong way, especially Carter (Noah Wyle) during a medical crisis at a construction site. And can it be that Benton (Eriq La Salle) is not truly the biological father of little Reese (Matthew Watkins)? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Two new doctors join the Emergency staff at Chicago's County General Hospital as ER begins its sixth season: Pediatric resident Cleo Finch (Michael Michele) and Croatian émigré Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic). Getting things off to a lively start, a truck crash through a coffee shop window results in a larger than usual volume of ER patients. Elsewhere, rumors fly that the prickly Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) will replace the retiring Dr. Anspaugh as chief of staff -- a contingency that Greene (Anthony Edwards) tries to prevent, only to be ruthlessly undercut by the ambitious Weaver (Laura Innes). John Carter (Noah Wyle) treats his former sister-in-law Elaine (Rebecca De Mornay) after she has a minor accident, thereby triggering a whole new romantic chapter in Carter's life. And Jeanie (Gloria Reuben) receives a marriage proposal. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
By now convinced that her friend Dr. Lawrence (Alan Alda) is in the early stages of Alzheimer's, Weaver (Laura Innes) dolefully conspires with Greene (Anthony Edwards) to force Lawrence to face his problem. A nursing-home fire brings in a multitude of patients and heap of trouble for Carter (Noah Wyle). Carol (Julianna Margulies) goes out on a limb to help the pregnant, heroin-addicted Meg (Martha Plimpton). Dr. Dave (Erik Palladino) may have caused the explosion that has been blamed on Cleo Finch (Michael Michele). And Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben) bids goodbye to the ER. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
On Christmas Eve, Carol brings one of her twin babies into the ER for a checkup, while the attending room is clogged with half a dozen very sick Santas. Overstepping her authority, Finch (Michael Michele) takes teenager Chad (Emile Hirsch) away from his mother (Roxanne Hart) so he can undergo treatment for alcohol abuse. Corday (Alex Kingston) tries to persuade patient Rollins (Lawrence Monoson) to have leg surgery. And Lucy (Kellie Martin) doggedly tracks down the off-duty Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) to beg his help in a very delicate heart transplant. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
