This melancholy love story of dependence and fear, which represents the first union between Kazakh and French filmmakers, examines an unambitious young man's obsession with a former ballet dancer. Adik, at 25, has not found his life's direction and so spends his days living in the street. The former ballerina Aijan is now an instructor in an Alma-Ata theater. She is sad because her children are growing up and leaving her. Her son is already in Paris, and now her daughter also wants to leave. One night as Aijan is heading home, she is accosted by Adik who tries to rape her. He fails and Aijan does not press charges. Adik begins to follow her. When he falls upon her doorstep in a drunken, feverish stupor, she takes pity and takes him into her apartment. It is the beginning of a complex love-hate-and fear, relationship. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This Soviet-made love story is set in Kirghizia, and is based on a short story by Chingiz Aitmatov, a friend of Gorbachev's whom he later appointed Ambassador to Luxemburg. This film is a creative collaboration between the very-well-known Russian filmmaker Sergei Yutkevich and the film's actual director Irina Poplavskaya. The story concerns a love affair as seen through the eyes of Seit (Nasredin Dubashev), a young artist. Seit's older sister Jamilya (Natalya Arinbasarova) is married to a soldier who is away at war. She meets, and begins to fall in love with another soldier, Daniyar (Suimenkul Chokmorov), who is recuperating from his wounds in her village. The setting, in an Asian part of the USSR, is exotic and unfamiliar, and it receives a lush photographic treatment, moving from black and white, to sepia and then to color in keeping with the progress of the young artist's pictures. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Dyuishen (Bolot Beishenaliev) is assigned to the mountainous Kirghiz region of Central Asia by the Young Communist League after he is discharged from the Red Army. It is 1923 and the Civil war has ended. The former soldier becomes a teacher, bringing the Leninist doctrine to the remote Moslem area where elders did not allow children to go to school. He falls in love with one of his students, but the young woman is sold by her father to a wealthy chieftain. When the school is burned down, the majestic poplar trees that are a source of local pride are cut down to rebuild the new structure. This lyrical drama is the directorial debut of the gifted Andrei Konchalovsky, who is best known by American audiences for his 1985 feature Runaway Train. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
