True love overcomes all obstacles in this romantic drama from the Philippines. When Miguel marries Cita, a girl not of his caste, his mother refuses to accept her and humiliates the former bar singer at every turn. Cita endures this because she knows that Miguel is crazy in love with her. Unfortunately he must temporarily leave her in order to find more money with which to support them. During his travels he is shot, suffers amnesia, and is rescued by a beautiful woman who wants to have his baby. Poor Miguel must endure a lot before he is reunited with his soul-mate Cita. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The premise of this melodrama -- a young woman falls in love with a married man, and they eventually try to live together -- may be tame for Western audiences, but director Ishmael Bernal made this film for the Philippines, where divorce is forbidden at this time. Marilou (Vilma Sanders works as a guide in a Planetarium and has an on-going affair with Emil (Christopher de Leon) that neither her family nor friends can condone -- Emil is married and has two sons. But when his wife leaves him, Emil and Marilou move in together, and that is when the problems start. She tries to make everything work out perfectly, and Emil, in turn, shows an arrogance that was quite hidden before. Given society's disapproval of their arrangement in the bargain, their future together hardly seems bright. Ishmael Bernal was one of the most prolific directors in Philippine film history, he died in 1996 after making more than 50 films.

The irrational tyranny of a retired policeman over his abject wife and family emerges as a powerful force in this story of incest, abuse, and pervasive, internalized fear -- apparently based on a true case history. The ex-policeman's daughter Mila (Charo Santos), two months pregnant, is allowed to marry her boyfriend Noel (Jay Ilagan), a mild young man of chubby proportions -- but Mila's father does everything he can to make the wedding difficult. When the mother (Charito Solis) hears that her husband has given his permission for Mila to marry, she is shocked and preoccupied. Just after the wedding, she pretends to be sick, forcing the newlyweds to spend the night in her -- and her husband's -- house. It quickly becomes clear that the father is not going to let his daughter leave the house again -- and his ruthless dominance is unbalanced enough to indicate that a showdown will be inevitable. Meanwhile, flashbacks and dream sequences provide some clues as to who fathered Mila's baby -- an injustice in itself that merits some sort of retribution. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The long-recognized excesses in the "hazing" season at American fraternities is escalated several notches in this Philippine version of the same theme. The young men who rush Alpha Kappa Omega are not all of the same stripe, nor are their prospective frat brothers who when taken as a whole, represent a streak of sadism that reaches into the realm of severe psychosis. Violence and torture are graphically shown, especially in a confrontation between the AKO fraternity and the men at Sigma Omicron Sigma. Director Mike De Leon has chosen to emphasize fascist and gay overtones in the abnormal behavior of his "frat men," a slant that is bound to offend some viewers, just as the violence will offend others. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
