Safe sex just got a lot more dangerous in this purposefully outrageous comedy from Germany. A college professor, Mr. Smirnoff (Ralf Wolter) lures an attractive female student, who is willing to do just about anything to improve her grade, to New York's Hotel Quickie, where he avails himself of one of the free condoms provided by the management. However, the prophylactic in question has sprouted teeth and has a taste for blood, and before long, the prof is suddenly missing a penis. Assigned to investigate this strange case is detective Luigi Mackeroni (Udo Samel), a gay policeman who just transferred from Sicily and is a little lonely in his new home. When Luigi and Billy (Marc Richter), a good looking hustler, decide to repair to the Hotel Quickie for some fun and games, the detective himself is attacked by the carnivorous rubber (though his injuries are considerably less than those suffered by Prof. Smirnoff). Now much better acquainted with his new nemesis, Luigi has to convince his partner about the menace of the killer condoms, while in his spare time, he tries to brush off the uninvited advances of burly transvestite Babette (Leonard Lansink). Kondom des Grauens, released in the United States by Troma as Killer Condom, was based on a comic book by German cartoonist Ralf Koenig, who also wrote the screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This period drama explores the life and times of the 16th century doctor and scientist who some believed could see into the future. Michel de Nostradamus (Tcheky Karyo) was the son in a Jewish family who posed as Catholics to be spared the wrath of the Inquisition. As a student of the renowned physician Dr. Scalinger (F. Murray Abraham), Nostradamus created herbal cures and did pioneering research in the importance of proper nutrition and hygiene. However, he was unable to protect his wife Marie (Julia Ormand) from the Black Plague sweeping the country, and he lost both her and their two children. Nostradamus remarried, to widow Anne (Assumpta Sterna), but at the urging of Scalinger, he began to more carefully explore the strange trances that befell him, and Nostradamus began writing prophetic essays predicting any number of future catastrophes. Nostradamus also features Amanda Plummer as Queen Catherine de Medici and Anthony Higgins as the King. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Protected from the intrigues of con-men by the overwhelming blanket of the former regime in East Germany, at first it seems that Ada Fenske, the elderly widow living on a farm near a soon-to-be abandoned Russian island military base is fair game. The (West) German military intelligence services want to acquire her farm. At first, their agent attempts to buy the property openly, but her refusal to sell motivates him to try far shadier techniques. He comes up with a relative she never knew about who is entitled to a share in the property and tries to blackmail the township's mayor to get his cooperation. However, the hard-working and honest old lady has an ally in the person of her more sophisticated border, a woman who works in the mayor's office and has been to the West. She takes great delight in foiling the underhanded agent. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
