Teak Leaves at the Temples documents a meeting of musicians that come from two very different styles. Players steeped in the tradition of improve-based western jazz perform with musicians who follow the folk music traditions of Java. Their performances are interspersed with footage of locals sharing stories about the history of the area. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Indonesian Opera Jawa director Garin Nugroho takes the helm for this tale of magic realism set on the island of Bali and concerning three women in search of redemption. In Bali, musical chants are commonplace, as are ceremonies in which the masses present offerings to the spirits and deities. In this setting, three "seeds" seek out the answers to the problems that plague their lives. Maharani is a twenty seven year old outsider in search of the truth about her parentage. Advised by a Balinese mystic to study dance under a prominent Ubud performer, Maharani embarks on a journey that will ultimately shake her beliefs in both the law and judiciary system in Bali. Dewi is a forty year old Balinese singer and radio host whose pregnancy has recently grown complicated. When Dewi is forced to choose between an abortion or possible stillbirth, her inner anguish emerges in the form of a haunting improvised chant. Lastly, there's Nian, a teenage girl in search of a paternal role model after her father is imprisoned for corruption. Despite fleeting moments of joy in each tale, the vice, poverty, and desperation that define life in contemporary Indonesia ultimately combine to ensure that each story concludes on a decidedly dark note. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In this innovative and long-in-development cross-cultural musical from director Garin Nugroho, a contented pair of former Ramayana dancers who have since forsaken their art in favor of selling earthenware finds their real-life relationship falling toward the same dark fate as their fictional counterparts. A married couple who live a simple life in a remote village, Siti (Artika Sari Devi) and Setio (Martinus Miroto) once made a living by reenacting the mythical tale of Sita and Prince Rama. As the story goes, Sita and Rama lived a life of marital bliss until the nefarious King Ravana kidnapped Sita and spirited her away to the land of Lanka in hopes of realizing his darkest fantasies. Now, as if the tragic tale has purposefully sought to curse those who would attempt to dramatize it, Siti and Setio find their own relationship plagued by the arrival the powerful and domineering Ludiro (Eko Supriyanto), a ruthless tyrant who will stop at nothing to claim Siti as his own. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

It does not help that Waluyo refuses to coddle him and demands his best all the time. Ilalang has been in love with dancer Bulan for ages, but it takes him a long time to tell her. She too keeps her distance, but well into the story, she finally gives in. Afterward she decides she must "purify" herself.
