A successful young doctor with a beautiful wife, a happy child, and a comfortable house finds his life suddenly changed in ways he never thought possible after being injured in a serious car accident. To the outside eye Lazar Perkov (Boris Nacev) has everything -- indeed his friends and colleagues have even gone so far as to christen him with the nickname "Lucky." But appearances can sometimes be deceptive, and despite having all the creature comforts, Lazar is constantly trying to live up to the demands of his overbearing mother and discontented spouse. Every day seems to be pretty much the same for the man they call Lucky, until one day when Lazar barely survives a devastating automobile accident. Upon recovering from his life-threatening injuries, Lazar is confronted by a series of people who appear to die time and again, and always deliver the cryptic message "Return what is not yours. Have respect." Experiencing such visions in dreamland is one thing, but when they begin to invade his waking life, Lazar quickly draws the conclusion that these apparitions are simply lost souls who have yet to find peace in the afterlife. When the specter of an old woman begins speaking in a dialect Lazar can't recognize, the frightened accident survivor seeks out the aid of a linguistics professor in deciphering her message. Despite the fact that the professor always seems to be away at a conference, his wife is more than willing to help. Soon, she and Lazar have entered into a bizarre relationship. Unfortunately for Lazar, the situation only grows more haunting, and as the people around him begin to appear and disappear at random, and his wife appears indifferent to her husband's fate as she departs for a seaside vacation with her lover and child. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Stringer (Idris Elba) repeats his advice to Avon (Wood Harris), telling him to call a truce with Omar (Michael K. Williams) until things settle down. But Avon is worried about what people will say if they see Omar walking around. D'Angelo (Larry Gilliard Jr.) talks to Wallace (Michael B. Jordan) who admits that he wants to give up the life and maybe go back to school. D'Angelo encourages him, saying he's got brains and a good heart. Bubbles (Andre Royo) and Johnny (Leo Fitzpatrick) are surprised to see a speaker from NA, Waylon (country-rocker Steve Earle) at the towers awaiting a new drug shipment. Waylon explains that he's there trying to help his nephew get clean. After another drug-stealing scam goes wrong for Bubbles, he decides to try to kick again. Herc (Dominick Lombardozzi) and Carver (Seth Gilliam) confiscate about 20 grand from Wee-Bey (Hassan Johnson), but it seems like small change to Avon's operation. Daniels (Lance Reddick) calls the detectives on the carpet when it appears that some of the money is missing. Freamon (Clarke Peters), Prez (Jim True-Frost), and Sydnor (Corey Parker Robinson) go on an exhaustive search to see where Avon hides his money. The unit spots Avon at a local basketball tournament, but he quickly evades them when they try to follow him home. She tearfully confronts D'Angelo -- who lied to her about the girl's whereabouts -- before walking out on him. Omar gets Avon's cell number, and Wee-Bey's code, from a rival drug dealer, and makes his move on Avon. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
Love and war divide two brothers in a drama from award-winning director Milcho Manchevski, his first since his acclaimed 1994 debut Pred Dozhdot. Milcho Manchevski's first feature film is a three-part story of the violence and political chaos tearing apart the newly independent nation of Macedonia (former Yugoslavia). In part one, Kiril (Grégoire Colin), an Orthodox monk, encounters Zamira (Labina Mitevska), a Muslim from Albania. Zamira is frightened and has nowhere to go, so Kiril lets her stay in his cell, knowing that if the authorities find her, his peaceful life will be shattered. The second segment, set in London, concerns Anne (Katrin Cartlidge), married to stable but boring Nick (Jay Villiers) but enjoying an affair with Macedonian photographer Aleksander (Rade Serbedzija); Anne is trying to decide if she should stay with Nick or leave with Aleksander, before unexpected events make the decision for her. The conclusion follows Aleksander back to Macedonia; while he's tired of photographing war, he finds no sanctuary in his home town, as Christians and Muslims wage war and he accidentally causes the death of innocent bystanders. Before the Rain received an 1995 Academy Award nomination as Best Foreign Language Film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
