San Fu Maltha
A gruff Australian farmer puts his own lonely life at risk in order to help a desperate refugee in director Peter Duncan's intimate rural drama. John (William McInnes) is the kind of man who likes his solitude. A man of habit whose best friend stands on four legs, John's volatile temperament makes it difficult for him to connect with most people. One morning, John is gazing out of his kitchen window when he spots a bloodied young woman stammering weakly towards his house. Instinctively, the farmer carries her into his home and begins tending to her massive wounds. Though John is unable to break the language barrier that will allow him to communicate openly with the woman, it is clear that she is terrified. Later driven by instinct to hide the woman when some unexpected visitors come knocking on his door, John decides against calling the police and does his best to aid her in her slow recovery. In the process John learns that the woman's name is Tahmeena (Monic Hendrickx). As Tahmeena's grasp of the English language takes hold, she and John begin to exchange stories: hers about being a refugee in Australia and his about being a widowed farmer just trying to keep the daily routine. Eventually, the outside world comes crashing down on the pair - threatening not just their growing bond, but their very lives as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The fatal shooting of a Moroccan youth by a racist police officer finds simmering tensions between ethic Dutch and a rapidly expanding Moroccan-heritage minority bubbling over into a boil in director Albert ter Heerdt's more serious-minded follow up to 2004's Shouf shouf habibi!. When veteran policeman Frank (Marcel Musters) and his Moroccan-Dutch partner Aaliyah (Maryham Hassouni) receive word of a potential break-in at a local youth center, they arrive on the scene to find two teenagers crouched behind a dumpster. When one of the teens panics and leaps out from behind the dumpster brandishing what appears to be a handgun, racist cop Frank immediately opens fire. Now Moroccan teen Redouan (Iliass Ojja) is dead, but his friend Karim (Ilias Addab) somehow managed to escape without injury. As the community goes into an uproar over the senseless killing, Aaliyah struggles to discern whether her partner's blatant racism played into his split-second decision to use deadly force in the heat of the moment. Out in the streets, Karim and the authority-weary locals openly advocate violent protest while others such as Redouan's level headed older brother Said (Mimoun Oaissa), the owner of a popular youth boxing gym, urges everyone to wait and see what becomes of the case. Later, when Said is accused of being a traitor to his own people, he begins to grow uncomfortable in his relationship with his white girlfriend (Chantel Janzen). Meanwhile, Aaliyah's fiancée Marouan (Mohammed Chaara) is derided by his future father-in-law for opting to join the Dutch Army, and local filmmaker Woulter (Roeland Fernhout) ventures out into the streets with girlfriend Kim (Hadewych Minis) to conduct research for an upcoming movie about the immigrant experience in Denmark. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Writer/director Antti-Jussi Annila's picture Jade Warrior (Jade Soturi) takes as its starting-off point an arresting and little-known fact -- the similarity of Chinese and Finnish mythologies -- and uses it to combine two seemingly unrelated genres: the quirky Finnish comedy drama (typified by the works of Kaurismaki) and the Chinese martial arts film. Inspired by a well-known Finnish epic called The Kalevala, the story opens with a down-on-his luck hardware merchant who gets dumped by his girlfriend. She tries to dispose of his collection of Asian artifacts at an antique dealer, but this sets off a mythical series of events that turns the merchant into a warrior prince, fated to battle a demon in icy northern Finland, responsible for enslaving all of humankind. The prince is abetted -- and then ultimately betrayed -- by a two-faced female warrior who has captured his heart and thus carries his greatest weakness in her hands. The battle involves enchanted boxes, spectacular swordfights, and supernatural events that come together -- simultaneously -- in an isolated cabin on the outskirts of Helsinki and in the rural Chinese mountains. Tommi Eronen, Markku Peltola, Zhang Jing-chu, and Krista Kosonen co-star; Annila co-authored the script with Petri Jokiranta. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Musicians from different lands but sharing a common heritage come together for a concert tour that proves as revelatory for the participants as their audiences in this documentary. In 2001, American promoters persuaded five noted bands of gypsy musicians to join forces for what was billed as "the Gypsy Caravan Tour," but while these musicians appealed to many of the same fans, for the most part they had never met before going on the road together. The performers were Taraf de Haidouks, an 18-piece group from Romania whose lineup spans several generations; another Romanian group, the 11-piece horn ensemble Fanfare Ciocarlia; Antonio de Pipa's Flamenco Ensemble, which combines both music and dance in their performances; Maharaja, a Northern Indian group featuring musicians from all sides of Indian society; and Esma Redzepova, one of Macedonia's best and most acclaimed vocalists. As the tour wore on, the artists began to interact both musically and socially, and their different takes on gypsy music began to inform one another in new and interesting ways. Filmmaker Jasmine Dellal followed the tour with a camera crew, and When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy Caravan offers a look at the music these artists performed on stage as well as their interaction after the shows and on the road; the film also features individual interviews with the musicians back home after the tour was completed. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Rachel Steinn (Carice van Houten) is a beautiful Jewish woman living in German-occupied Holland during late 1944. Her family members - who have been falsely promised safe passage to Belgium (their names recorded in the 'black book' of the title) are instead robbed and slaughtered by the Germans on a premeditated basis; Rachel herself manages to escape by diving into the water and swimming away. She narrowly avoids capture, then joins the local resistance movement. With her hair dyed blonde, Rachel can easily pass for Aryan, and when the leader of the Dutch resistance movement learns his son has been captured by Axis forces, Rachel is asked to use her feminine charms to persuade a German commander to arrange for the boy's release. Rachel soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous double life as she becomes a sexual plaything for the Nazis while attempting to bring down their evil empire as a spy.
