An illegal immigrant who imagined America to be the land of opportunity finds that good fortune does not come as easily as he thought in this drama. Liam (Karl Geary) is a man from Ireland who has grown tired of the poverty and limited opportunities of his homeland, so he smuggles himself into the United States, hoping to find work in New York. While Liam's initial contacts in the Bronx turn sour on him, his unstable cousin Des (Ian Hart) allows him to stay in the flat that he shares with two other illegal aliens from Ireland, Owen (Jared Harris), a construction worker, and Paddy (Aidan Gillen), a gardener. Living across the hall from Des and his mates are Mary (Louise Lombard), who's currently dating Owen, and Brenda (Andrea Irvine), who has her eyes on Liam. Paddy, meanwhile, has fallen in love with the daughter of his boss, but given that he's an Irish immigrant struggling to get by and she comes form a wealthy family from Connecticut, he's not sure how he'll overcome their social differences. Eventually, Liam finds work in a bar run by Mario (James Belushi) as he tries to make a place for himself in America while staying out of harm's way. This avant garde film is based on two angry autobiographical books by David Wojnarowicz: Close to the Knives and Memories That Smell Like Gasoline. Wojnarowicz, a noted performance artist, died of AIDS . The film examines three sides of his life. The first looks at his suburban childhood and the abuse he suffered at his alcoholic father's violent hand. The second chronicles his experiences as an teen-age street hustler and criminal in New York, and the third section, which is highly abstract, follows the adult Dave as he wanders through a dangerous desert. Once these identities are established, chronology is scattered to the winds, and the three ages of David play up to and comment on each other. The work of Wojnarowicz is also represented in Knud Vesterkov's film, By The Dawn's Early Light. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Roxanne: The Prize Pulitzer was based on the best-selling 1987 autobiography of (who else?) Roxanne Pulitzer. Since both the book and the subsequent TV movie were told from Roxanne's point of view, it is to be expected that certain ego-massaging liberties would be taken with the facts behind her sensational divorce from publishing heir Herbert Pulitzer (Perry King), and Herbert's subsequent bitter child custody battle. Thus it is that Roxanne is portrayed as a wide-eyed innocent at the time of her marriage, and Pulitzer is a double-dyed dastard. Those who tuned in to see the sex and drug orgies which permeated the couple's relationship were in for a major letdown: these "hot" elements were soft-pedalled into virtual invisibility. Not to be confused with the made-for-TV horror film She Waits, the equally TV-bound She Lives is (to some) a horror of a different sort. Desi Arnaz Jr. is Andy Reed, a college student who falls in love with coed Pam Rainey (Season Hubley). She learns that she has a fatal illness. They stay together in spite of the doom clouds hanging overhead. The one saving grace: Season Hubley's character fights tooth and nail against dying a quiet death, as opposed to Ali MacGraw's graceful succumbing to the inevitable. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
