While taking the AP Calculus exam, high-school student Matt Davis (John Patrrick Amedori) collapses. Discovering that Matt has been lethally poisoned, House (Hugh Laurie) suspects that the boy has been doing drugs at home. When another student exhibits the same symptoms, however, it is obvious that the source of the poison is the school testing room--but how can this be? Monica (Glenn Close) takes command of The Barn, and tells the troops that they will be implementing an asset-seizure program. She puts Vic (Michael Chiklis) in charge of all gang-related felonies. Units working under Vic are assigned to take Polaroids of all gang members, and their ink, in order to build a database. Vic now knows that Shane (Walton Goggins) and his partner, Army (Michael Pena), are working with Antwon (Anthony Anderson), and he lets Lem (Kenny Johnson) and Ronnie (David Rees Snell) know. Vic says they should keep Shane close and keep IAD off him, or it will come back to them. There's a gang war erupting in Farmington, and Monica wants it headed off quickly. Vic reluctantly goes to Antwon for help in stopping the violence between the One-Niners and the Spookstreet Soldiers. Choppa (Six Reasons), a drive-by suspect from the Soldiers, is brought in for questioning. He doesn't want to talk, so Monica threatens to seize his mother's house, which he paid for with drug money. She feels conflicted about throwing the family out on the street. When Choppa turns out to have made a pornographic rap video with Bounce (Tanya Alexander), the girlfriend of Puppethead (Kamil Beale), a member of the One-Niners, Vic thinks he's found what initiated the escalating gang violence, and reluctantly turns to Antwon for help in stopping it. Dutch (Jay Karnes) and Claudette (CCH Pounder) are still being blackballed by the DA, so they're assigned to catch a convenience store robber who buys a hot cup of coffee then throws it in the clerk's face. Dutch pressures Claudette to apologize to the DA. She refuses, and his frustration grows. He finally decides to go behind her back to make a deal. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Darwyn Al-Sayeed (Michael Ealy) meets with Ray (James LeGros), his FBI handler, who wants to know where Bobby Habib and his family are. Darwyn deflects the question, complaining about the FBI losing the group when they drove out into the desert. Later, Darwyn asks Farik (Oded Fehr) what happened to Bobby's family. Farik is reluctant to tell Darwyn anything he doesn't need to know, but tells him the family was sent back to Egypt. He's sent to the mall on a recon mission with Tommy (Blake Shields), who keeps getting a call on his cell phone from someone named "Lynn" that he refuses to answer. He later tells Darwyn that it's his mother, a professor at Berkeley, and that he's worried she'll come snooping around. Darwyn has to do some quick thinking when Tommy notices that they're being followed. Farik goes to USC in an effort to recruit Eddy (Jeff Mallare), an Indonesian microbiology student. Eddy is not interested in joining the cell, claiming that his fight is in Jakarta, but under pressure from Farik, he does provide him with some necessary materials. Gayle (Melissa Sagemiller) asks Darwyn what happened to Bobby Habib, and he claims ignorance. She also tells him that the father of her son Marcus (Jake Soldera) died in a drunk driving accident. Darwyn gradually comes to understand that Farik is planning an anthrax attack on the West Side Galleria, and warns Ray, but the plan goes in motion must sooner than they had anticipated. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Matthew (Joel Rosenthal) sets fire to the Mackeys' kitchen, forcing the family to move in with Vic (Michael Chiklis), and making Corrine (Cathy Cahlin Ryan) consider the possibility of putting her son in some type of home. Danny (Catherine Dent) and Julien (Michael Jace) turn again to Taylor (RonReaco Lee) for help in tracking down some stolen booze. Tavon (Brian J. White) regains consciousness, and remembers getting into a fight with Shane (Walton Goggins). O'Brien (Jim Budig) disappears after being targeted by the Armenians, as a few more footless bodies turn up. Aceveda (Benito Martinez) learns that a mole within the treasury department has been feeding information to the Armenians, as they next target the Byz Latz, getting that much closer to Vic and his crew. Vic's slip of the tongue arouses Dutch's (Jay Karnes) suspicion that the Strike Team has some nefarious connection to the missing Armenian loot. The AGC surveillance uncovers a connection between a local gang, the Spook Street Souljahs, and the notorious Horde. Claudette (CCH Pounder) joins the Decoy Squad in an undercover operation to bust a kiddie porn purveyor and learn more about the gangs' planned collaboration. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

After viciously assaulting Armadillo (Danny Pino), Mackey (Michael Chiklis) storms off into the night. Claudette (C.C.H. Pounder) begins to investigate Tio's murder. Someone dumps a severed arm on Dutch's (Jay Karnes) desk, and he desperately tries to find the girl it belongs to in the hopes that she's being kept alive by whoever maimed her. After identifying the victim through fingerprints, he questions a couple, Marcy (Melanie Lynskey) and Bob (Marc Vann), who live nearby and claim to have seen the victim arguing with a man. Things take a strange turn when Dutch learns that Bob was charged with kidnapping years earlier. Dutch tries to bully Marcy into turning Bob in before it's too late. Joe (Carl Weathers of the Rocky movies), Mackey's old training partner, shows up with a plan to get revenge on Fleetwood Walker (Garland Whitt), the thug who successfully sued the department and ended his police career. Mackey helps him uncover Fleetwood's recent criminal activities before things turn sour. Danny (Catherine Dent) finds out that the wife of the Arab man she shot is suing her and the department, claiming she acted out of racial bias. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Mackey (Michael Chiklis) busts a cockfighting ring. One of the suspects offers to help the Strike Team nab a major gun dealer, so Shane (Walton Goggins) goes undercover as a trainer to catch him. But Shane is more interested in the bounty that the Mexican government is offering for the gunrunner than in making the bust. Gilroy (John Diehl) is involved in a hit-and-run, and he goes to Mackey for help in covering up the crime, while Dutch (Jay Karnes) conducts an investigation. In an underserved black neighborhood, a white man brutally murders his girlfriend's mother and her friend 47 minutes after the women had called 911. While Claudette (CCH Pounder) investigates the crime, Gilroy publicly shifts the blame to Aceveda (Benito Martinez) for the neighborhood's lack of police manpower. But in the course of investigating the hit-and-run, Dutch and Mackey discover that there's more to the case than meets the eye, and Dutch's friendship with Gilroy is severely tested. Meanwhile, Julien (Michael Jace) gets advice from Reverend Cook (Dick Anthony Williams) about how to "overcome" his homosexuality. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Karchy Jonas (Brad Renfro) was born in Hungary and immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio in the early 1960s where he felt adrift in a strange sea of American culture. Jonas tries to fit in at the Catholic high school he attends but finds himself a laughing stock. At home, his stern father (Maximilian Schell) insists that he adhere to traditional Hungarian ways. Karchy's only respite is the rock & roll music he adores. A year before he arrived, flashy, failed disc jockey Billy Magic (Kevin Bacon) rolled into town, found a job at WHK and became the host of the High School Hall of Fame contest, something that Karchy decides he must win so he too can be cool and therefore impress his lovely classmate Diney (Calista Flockhart). Eventually, he does win and before long has made friends with Billy. The DJ proves to be a real pal and pays Karchy a C-note a week to run a few errands and do odd jobs for him. Some of those tasks involve taking money from promoters. When not working, Billy is introducing Karchy to life's wild side. But despite such fun times, there is much the naive youth is destined to learn the hard way about his new buddy Billy. The film's story comes from screenwriter Joe Eszterhas' (Basic Instinct) script, penned around 1982. A sterling cast headed by Oscar-nominated Susan Sarandon makes this slick thriller one of the better adaptations of a John Grisham bestseller. Mark Sway (Brad Renfro) witnesses the suicide of a Mafia lawyer, who confesses that the Mob was behind the murder of a U.S. senator. Mark's brother is traumatized into a coma by the incident; gangster Barry Muldano (Anthony LaPaglia) is soon on Mark's trail, and in desperation, he arrives at the office of recovering alcoholic lawyer Reggie Love (Sarandon). With the Mob after them, and a ruthless federal attorney (Tommy Lee Jones) trying to force Mark to reveal what he knows, Love battles to guarantee the safety of her client and his family. The relationship between Reggie Love and Mark Sway is the center of the film, adding considerable character development to plot's routine elements. Director Joel Schumacher helmed another Grisham adaptation, A Time To Kill, in 1996. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
