The four days in the life of three aimless, but handsome men in the South of France are chronicled in this French buddy film. It is the end of the tourist season and Marcel, Raoul, and Yoyo are simply hanging around. As usual, their days are spent drinking pastis, sunning themselves, robbing tourists, and driving around. They feel no compunction to look for real work, and they are not concerned with the moral ramifications of their actions. They are figuratively taken under the wing of Maurice, the owner of a local cafe. His pragmatic but sexy daughter Madeline uses these losers to exact her revenge upon a local honcho. The revenge is violent. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This technically impressive throwback to the early days of film noir stars Richard Berry as Bruno, a young actor who seems to get blamed for everything. Spotting a gorgeous female shoplifter (Victoria Abril) in trouble, Bruno decides to help her and gets arrested in her place. While lamenting his fate in prison, he is blamed for an escape attempt in which a psychotic guard (Richard Bohringer) is shot. When Bruno's sentence is lengthened, the guard makes his life a nightmare until the terrorized prisoner must lash out in the ultimate rebellion against (and surrender to) his inescapable fate. Director Denis Amar's moody film is strong on atmosphere but weak in characterization, despite an impressively sadistic turn by Bohringer, and the movie leaves the viewer flat rather than moved. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

It is only with some reluctance that big-time hood Alphonse (Lino Ventura) allows himself to be persuaded that a major painting-theft planned by some formerly small-time gangsters is a good idea. He gives the idea his backing and support and winds up holding the bag for the crime as the others escape. On emerging from prison, he wreaks havoc on his betrayers, until a pretty girl stops him in his tracks. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

- Lino Ventura, Charles Aznavour, (more)
