A contestant in a word-game tournament is killed when he is literally forced to eat his words by having letter-tiles jammed down his throat. As the CSI investigates this case, another corpse, that of a teenaged girl, is found in the ruins of a burned-down building. This being the second fire in the same neighborhood within the same week, Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) and Warrick (Gary Dourdan) suspect that a serial arsonist is at large -- but when will he (or she) strike again? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Omar (Michael K. Williams) hits another Barksdale stash house, but this time, they're better prepared for him, and in the ensuing gun battle, a member of each crew is killed. Bunk (Wendell Pierce) catches the double homicide, and quickly realizes that Omar was involved, but he's also under tremendous pressure to complete an impossible task. For PR purposes, he's been instructed to recover Officer Dozerman's gun, which was stolen after Dozerman was shot. Carcetti (Aidan Gillen) continues to put pressure on the mayor, going to the press with the news that the next police academy class has been postponed for budgetary reasons. An irate Royce (Glynn Turman) orders Burrell (Frankie Faison) to take responsibility for the postponement, angering the commissioner. Prop Joe (Robert F. Chew) warns Stringer (Idris Elba) that the police are listening to their phone conversations. He also tells Stringer "what kills more police than bullets and liquor." It's boredom. "Keep it boring, String," he advises. With the wire dead, Daniels (Lance Reddick) assigns his team a new target in East Baltimore. McNulty (Dominic West) is still obsessed with Stringer, however, and continues to investigate D'Angelo's death. Bodie's (J.D. Williams) crew continues to encroach on one of Marlo's (Jamie Hector) corners, leading to violence. Cutty (Chad L. Coleman) visits an ex-girlfriend who tries to hook him up with a job opportunity. Bunny Colvin (Robert Wisdom), under increasing pressure to reduce felonies in his district, devises a radical plan to make some abandoned blocks in the neighborhood an enforcement-free zone, and coerce the dealers to move there. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
The detail hooks up GPS units to the cars of several operatives in the smuggling operation. Using this high-tech equipment, McNulty (Dominic West) discovers two locations -- a run-down diner and the remote Fort Howard Park, where the smugglers seem to congregate. The detail sets up surveillance, hoping to get a glimpse of the boss, who they think is Vondas (Paul Ben-Victor). Valchek (Al Brown) tries to undercut the detail by going straight to the FBI and handing them the case against Sobotka (Chris Bauer). The FBI decides to pursue a RICO case against the union, but also assists the detail's efforts to nab the smugglers. This isn't good enough for Valchek, who chews out Daniels for turning against him, and tries to pull Prez (Jim True-Frost) from the unit. Prez doesn't go quietly. At the towers, Bodie (J.D. Williams) has new product, and business is booming, but then Stringer (Idris Elba) shows up to tell his crew that they're to allow dealers from the East Side, including Cheese (Method Man), access to their turf. The rivalry is held in check by Stringer's orders, until Avon's enforcer from New York, Brother Mouzone (Michael Potts), shows up. Mouzone is not to be messed with, but Proposition Joe knows one guy who might be able to deal with him. Ziggy (James Ransone) loses it completely when he's underpaid for a shipment of stolen cars. He arranges a meeting between Stringer and Omar (Michael K. Williams). The Greek's (Bill Raymond) FBI contact, Agent Koutris (Tom Mardirosian), soon learns about the wiretaps, and shares that information. The Greek orders all operations shut down, and when the cops find this out through an intercepted text message, they race to get their paperwork in order for a raid before all the evidence is cleaned up. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
Premiering May 13, 2002, on BBC1, the British espionage-adventure series Spooks pitted undercover agents of the country's MI-5 squad (the U.K. equivalent of the NSA) against international troublemakers and terrorists. Though extremely violent and almost unbearably tense, the series scored its biggest points by dramatizing the pressures brought to bear against "average" people engaged in a top-secret profession: For example, one of the many plot threads involved the love life of Senior Case Officer Tom Quinn (Matthew MacFadyen), whose girlfriend was convinced that Tom was merely a lower-level computer tech. Other members of the "Spooks" team included Quinn's second-in-command, Zoe Reynolds (Keeley Hawes), technical genius Danny Hunter (David Oyelowo), reckless Tessa Phillips (Jenny Agutter), and department head Harry Pierce (Peter Firth). During the series' first season on the air, Spooks made headlines throughout the British Isles by virtue of its explosive second episode, in which a popular soap opera actor, misleadingly advertised as one of the series' "stars," was abruptly and nastily killed off; thereafter, audiences could never take anything that happened on the series for granted -- and the viewership soared. Spooks debuted over the American A&E cable network under the title MI-5 on July 22, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
