Previously costarred in The Trojan Brothers, David Farrar and Patricia Burke were reteamed in the British musical The Lisbon Story. Though the film ostensibly concerns the wartime exploits of a Gallic chanteuse (Burke) and a British spy (Farrar), the film's main selling angle was international popular operatic tenor Richard Tauber. Peripherally involved in the storyline, Tauber steals the show with his spirited musical renditions. The fact that the villains in the film are Nazis must have gratified Tauber, who would have faced extinction at the hands of the Gestapo had he remained in his native Germany. Sadly, The Lisbon Story proved to be Tauber's final screen appearance; he died two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Patricia Burke, David Farrar, (more)

In this comedy, a work-aholic husband pacifies his complaining, neglected wife by buying her the fabulous Peterville Diamond while they are on vacation in Mexico. He then returns to his work. Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne repeat their "Charters and Caldicott" characterizations from Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes for the British comedy-mystery Crooks Tour. This time, our cricket-happy heroes take a vacation in unoccupied Europe. They cross the path of a seemingly dedicated Nazi lass (Greta Gynt) who is actually loyal to the British crown. Laughs are in abundance, but the verbal wit displayed by Radford and Wayne in earlier films is noticeably lacking. Crooks Tour was one of hundreds of British films that were run to death during the early days of American television. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The British Room for Two takes place in a back-lot Venice. Womanizing Englishman Vic Oliver takes a fancy to married tourist Frances Day. In a plot device right out of Charley's Aunt, Oliver disguises himself in drag and hires on as Day' maid (female impersonation was a valuable part of music-hall favorite Oliver's repertoire). When Day's philandering hubby Basil Radford comes home, the laughs start rolling in. Room for Two is based on a stage farce by Gilbert Wakefield. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Raoul Walsh, best remembered for his rough-and-tumble action pictures, made this film on a rare loan-out to a British studio. Jim Tracey (Wallace Ford) is an American gangster who, while on the run from the law, flees to England, where he joins the British army by posing as a Canadian. Jim and his new friend Bert Dawson (John Mills) go through training together, and they both get to know Sally Briggs (Anna Lee), the daughter of their commanding officer. While Jim and Bert vie for Sally's attentions, Jim discovers that his girlfriend Jean Burdett (Grace Bradley) has followed him to England and is threatening to reveal his true identity. Jim ships out to China with his regiment before Jean's word can get too far; it turns out that Sally is also on board the ship, but that bit of good news turns sour when band of Chinese bandits attempt to seize the ship and take Sally with them. O.H.M.S. was also released under the more American-sounding title You're in the Army Now. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Dreams Come True for Ilona Ratkay (Frances Day), a popular opera singer who falls in love with gangly farm boy Anton (Nelson Keys). Not so lucky is Anton's father Albert (Hugh Wakefield), who is left all alone when his son runs off to the Big City with Ilona. Things really get sticky when Albert becomes obsessed with the notion that Ilona is actually his own illegitimate daughter! The more censurable aspects of the story are neatly skirted and circumvented with liberal doses of music and comedy. Dreams Come True is a remake of the German operetta Liebesmelodie. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Frances Day, Nelson Keys, (more)
