British actor Naveen Andrews first attracted international attention as Kip, Juliette Binoche's Sikh boyfriend in The English Patient (1996). A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Andrews got his start on television, starring in the popular -- to say nothing of racy -- 1993 miniseries The Buddha of Suburbia. The same year that he appeared in The English Patient, the actor portrayed a haughty king in Mira Nair's Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, a film whose content inspired no shortage of controversy in India. Screenwriter Hanif Kureishi marked his directorial debut in this slice-of-life chronicle about a collection of drug-dealing slackers in London. Centering on a band of delinquents calling themselves "the posse," the group is led by an ambitious male hustler named Muffdiver (Steven Mackintosh). His friend, Mr. Clint Eastwood (Justin Chadwick), begins to wonder about Muffdiver when he announces that he will no longer sell drugs for the gang. But soon Clint is wondering about himself, and after being beaten and stripped naked, he decides to go legitimate and look for a real job. He applies to a chic restaurant for a job as a waiter. The owner, Hemingway (Brad Dourif), promises to hire him if he comes back to the restaurant wearing a good pair of shoes. Obsessed with landing the job, he tries any way he can to get the pair of shoes. Karim's mother learns of the affair and leaves with his younger brother. Karim stays with his father and his new love. He begins a career on the stage. Based on a novel by Rumer Godden, the two-part British miniseries The Peacock Spring took place in Delhi, India, in 1959. Hattie Moraham starred as Una Gwithin, 15-year-old daughter of the recently appointed U.N. diplomat to the region. Una caused shock waves to ripple throughout what was left of the British empire when she fell in love with a charismatic (and extremely self-absorbed) Indian poet named Ravi Batticharya (Naveen Andrews). Further complicating the story is the curious animosity between Una's father and her Eurasian governess Alix (Jennifer Hall). In this visually striking saga of one woman's search for personal and sexual freedom in 16th century India, Maya (Indira Varma) is a servant girl who is a handmaid to Tara (Sarita Choudhury), a princess. Rasa teaches Tara the Dance of Enticement as a prelude to her upcoming marriage to the King, Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews), but the beautiful Maya turns out to be the more capable student, and when Raj invites Maya to his bedchamber, he proves to be no match for her seductive powers. Needless to say, Tara is furious when she learns that Maya has stolen Raj's heart, and Maya is banished from the palace. On the road, Maya soon meets a handsome sculptor, Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikaram), who is entranced by Maya's beauty and sexual prowess; she soon becomes his lover and favorite model. However, King Raj is still obsessed with Maya, and while Tara has won his hand in marriage, he has taken to drowning himself in opium and mindless sex with his mistresses when not trying to win Maya back. Several of the erotic scenes in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love were trimmed so the film could receive an "R" rating for its American theatrical release, but it appeared uncut on home video; the film had to be trimmed more extensively to gain a theatrical release in India, where it was filmed. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Anthony Minghella wrote and directed this award-winning adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's novel about a doomed and tragic romance set against the backdrop of World War II. In a field hospital in Italy, Hana (Juliette Binoche), a nurse from Canada, is caring for a pilot who was horribly burned in a plane wreck; he has no identification and cannot remember his name, so he's known simply as "the English Patient," thanks to his accent. When the hospital is forced to evacuate, Hana determines en route that the patient shouldn't be moved far due to his fragile condition, so the two are left in a monastery to be picked up later. In time, Hana begins to piece together the patient's story from the shards of his memories; he's actually Count Laszlo Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), of Hungarian nobility and an explorer working with a group mapping uncharted territory in North Africa. An Englishman, Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth), soon joins Almasy's team; travelling with him is his lovely and spirited wife, Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas). Katherine and Laszlo soon fall in love, which leads Laszlo to betray his friend, his country and all that is dear to him. Meanwhile, Hana and the Patient are joined by Kip (Naveen Andrews), a Sikh with a gift for defusing mines, and Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), an intelligence agent who knows some of Laszlo's most shameful secrets. A pregnant back-up singer in a Melbourne band finds herself saddled with two fellow travellers (one of whom is the father of her child), who are using her to escape the vengeful drug dealer they just robbed. When Mimi first asks her lover Haniff to travel with her to Perth so she can make peace with her estranged mother, he refuses. But then his pal Dean robs his own brother Jerry in part to feed his own addiction but also to spite Jerry for going out with Ariel, the girl Dean wants for himself. Jerry is a tough cookie and does not take the theft well. Armed and dangerous, he sets off for revenge. Needing to get out of town pronto, the two fugitives decide to tag along with Mimi. This 1998 version of Mighty Joe Young begins with a Gorillas in the Mist-type prologue and then jumps forward twelve years to find Bill Paxton leading a safari expedition to capture the legendary giant (two-ton) gorilla, the subject of the film's title. Paxton's intentions are admirable; he wants to remove the majestic beast from the imminent danger of poachers and set him up on a posh nature reserve in California. The x-factor comes in the form of Charlize Theron's beautiful jungle girl, Jill Young. Jill has been Joe's soul mate from birth and is the only human who can communicate with him. She is also the reason Paxton's maverick-on-the-run lingers at the reserve after his task is completed. From there, the plot is spurred on by the nefarious actions of a poacher with an Ahab complex and a battery of money hungry scientists who want to exploit Joe. Naturally, all of this puts a burr under the towering simian's skin, causing him to break free and go ape in L.A.'s concrete jungle. ~ Tom Meek, All Movie Guide

From the director of the acclaimed Salaam Bombay, My Own Country is based on the best-selling memoir of an Ethiopian doctor who treated HIV and AIDS patients in Johnson City in the smoky mountains of Eastern Tennessee in 1985. The film narrates the tribulations of a physician who takes home the problems of his patients. He has no time for his wife or his son, who are slowly becoming strangers to him. He resists the temptations of a blond nurse but gets drunk 'like a man' in the garage of a auto repairman friend. The film abounds in clichés, bad acting, and stereotypical characters, and its treatment of homosexuality is also questionable. A New Yorker, an Australian, and an Englishman return to their birthplace, Bombay India, in hopes of finding their identities and reorganizing their lives. All three arrive at the same time and end up sharing the same flat. Krishna, the American, has come back in hopes of launching a successful acting career in movies. He gets his big break when local gangster-turned-producer Matsana hires Krishna to appear in a musical extravaganza. Kris has no idea that Matsana desperately wants the movie to flop so he can reap big profits. The Englishman Xerxes is a flautist wrestling with his sexual identity. He knows that he is gay but is having trouble deciding whether or not to be open about it. The lonely apartment owner Persi is definitely homosexual and finds himself attracted to Xerxes. The third roommate, former Sydney resident Fernandes, has come to Bombay to search for his estranged brother. A complex mixture of slapstick, violence and sentiment coupled with a spoof on Indian masala movies, the film follows the three disparate protagonists as lives collide and split apart in increasingly chaotic ways. The first feature of NYU Film School-trained Kaizad Gustad, the film casts an eye upon the Bollywood (Bombay-based Indian Hollywood) film industry via an "A"-rate gangster and a "B"-Grade producer. The whole point is to show that India is not what it is supposed to be. Mobile phones have replaced Mantras, and Coca-Cola has taken over Karma. Bombay Boys has received attention in Toronto, Vancouver and London Film Festivals, but its real success is bound to be in the circuit it parodies, namely the commercial Bollywood cinema. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This made-for-TV movie was based on the true story of the men who created a gold mine by creating the first exotic dance club for women, and the bitter rivalry that tore them apart. Steve Banerjee (Naveen Andrews) was an Indian immigrant running a failing nightclub in Los Angeles when he met Nick Denoia (Paul Hipp), a choreographer scouting locations for a television show. Hoping to bring in business, Banerjee had been experimenting with presenting male strippers; Denoia suggested that the idea wasn't bad, but the presentation was all wrong, and he suggested they pool their resources to open a classy night spot featuring good looking and well-choreographed male dancers who would attract an upscale female clientele. Banerjee and Denoia named the club Chippendales, and it was soon a major success, but Denoia began angering Banerjee by telling the press he alone hatched the idea for the club, while Denoia was angry with his partner for overcrowding the club, trying to take full control the business, and using violence to discourage other clubs from featuring male dancers. Denoia began making plans to open a Chippendales franchise in New York behind Banerjee's back, and when Banerjee discovered this, the increasingly paranoid club owner decided it was time to take his partner out of the business once and for all. The decades-old wisdom and beliefs of the order are tested as reactions to the events are a mix of sympathetic and hostile and the brothers find themselves at odds. The monks, both young and old, find that the line between reason and faith becomes blurred and their ancient traditions begin to crumble as the unexplainable miracle begins to change their perception of reality and themselves. Soon, Jonathan and his friends find themselves pawns in a vast corporate conspiracy in which their lives are far less important than profits. A passenger jet breaks apart in mid-air, crash-landing on a tropical island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Left without the creature comforts and basic necessities of civilization, the 48 survivors are forced to rely upon one another to stay alive -- and given the personality quirks of these survivors, this won't be easy during the first season of the ABC hit series Lost. Generally with the help of flashbacks, viewers learn a number of deep dark secrets about the castaways on a need-to-know basis, especially the demons plaguing Dr. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) and one-hit-wonder rock star Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan). Every so often, a crisis arises for the principal purpose of revealing a hitherto unknown and unsuspected aspect of one of the characters. Inevitably, hostilities both minor and serious arise from the basic fundamental differences among the survivors: Korean couple Jin and Sun Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim) are unable to uphold their family traditions under the circumstances, while their inability to speak English creates an additional barrier between themselves and the others; and the MacGyver-like resourcefulness of former Iraqi Republican Guard Sayid (Naveen Andrews) is not enough to overcome the racism of some of his fellow passengers. Then there is the unfriendly aura of the island itself, with its inscrutable topography, and the bizarre menagerie of wild animals, ranging from a polar bear to a (possible) dinosaur! Also, the discovery in one episode of two long-dead bodies certainly does nothing to uplift the rescue hopes of the hapless survivors. And finally, there seems to be someone else on the island...someone not on the passenger list...someone who kidnaps two of the castaways and threatens to kill off the rest one by one.
