James Herriot wrote several well-loved books about his experiences as a small-town veterinarian in the Yorkshire countryside of Britain in the 1930s. One of them gave its title to the film All Creatures Great and Small. That family movie was so successful that this movie It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet, or All Things Bright and Beautiful was made. All the stories told explore the richness of the interactions between humans and animals and the quirky wisdom which a young country veterinarian develops under the wise and eccentric tutelage of his senior in practice, Siegfried Farnon. These stories later inspired a popular BBC television series. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Naughty, bawdy British music hall comedian Frank Randle is the whole show in When You Come Home. The story opens as Randle, decked out in old-codger makeup, relives his glory days in the British Army, a good a cue as any for the title song. The film then segues into an extended flashback to 1908, with the younger Randle causing havoc in a seedy London theater. The distinctive Lancashire humor of Frank Randle, coupled with his doubleand single-entendre quips, invariably resulted in huge box office returns in England, though American audiences were either baffled or bored by the star's cheeky vulgarity. When You Come Home was also released as Home Sweet Home. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Frank Randle, Leslie Sarony, (more)

Later on, our hero is engaged in a football match, where he is being badly trounced by the opposing team. Upon noticing that George is running away from his barn, Alf develops super strength and runs across the field to victory. Joe E. The Woman in Command in this well-appointed British musical is vaudeville star Maisie Marvello, played by Cicely Courtenedge. Born into a theatrical family that dates back to the 16th century, Maisie has every intention of carrying on the tradition into the 1930s, even though money is in short supply. The heroine's specialty is a Vesta Tillie-style male impersonation, which gives an added dimension to Maisie's on-and-off romance with effeminate stage manager Sebastian (Edward Everett Horton). The secondary romantic interest is handled by Anthony Bushell (later a prominent producer-director) and Dorothy Hyson. Woman in Command was co-scripted by Courtenedge's husband and frequent co-star Jack Hulbert. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Dame Cicely Courtneidge, Edward Everett Horton, (more)
