Originally released in England in 1941 as This Man is Dangerous, The Patient Vanishes was distributed in the US in 1947 to capitalize on the burgeoning popularity of James Mason. The story concerns the friendly rivalry between private detective Mick Cardby (Mason) and his father, Scotland Yard inspector Cardby (Gordon McLeod). Both father and son work shoulder to shoulder to rescue the kidnapped daughter (Barbara James) of a wealthy industrialist. In "Bulldog Drummond" fashion, the girl had been abducted while a patient at a somewhat shady hospital, leading the detectives to interrogate several suspicious-looking medical types. What romance there is can be found in the bantering relationship between Mick Cardby and his secretary Mollie (Margaret Vyner). Though no evidence exists to support this theory, it's possible that The Patient Vanishes had been intended as the first in a series of "Ellery Queen"-style mysteries starring Mason and McLeod. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Filmed in Ireland, Kathleen is a fanciful bit of blarney predicated on the ballad "Kathleen Mavourneen". American actress Sally O'Neill stars as Kathleen O'Moore, the romantic bone of contention between Michael Rooney (Tom Burke) and Dennis O'Dwyer (Jack Daly). The two rivals team up to rescue Kathleen from her nasty aunt Hannah (Ethel Gryffies), who has arranged a loveless but profitable marriage for the girl. Several prominent Irish stage actors, notably Sarry Allgood and Denis O'Neal, are cast in pivotal roles. Though director Carol Reed seldom included Laburnham Grove on his resumé, he allowed that it was quite successful, and a cut above the minor programmers he was usually assigned in the mid-1930s. Based on a novel by J. B. Priestley, the film stars Edmund Gwenn as Mr. Radfern -- solid citizen by day, counterfeiter by night. Saddled with a pack of tedious in-laws, Radfern decides to dispose of them by handing them a roll of "funny money" and inviting them to shop in town to their heart's content. He then skips town, secure in the knowledge that his unwelcome guests will soon be rounded up by the authorities.
