Written and directed by Italian filmmaker Pupi Avati, Il Cuore Altrove is a romantic drama centering on Nello, a college Humanities teacher played by Neri Marcoré. His parents are well-to-do tailors who work for the Pope, and they don't approve of Nello's line of work. At their urging, Nello moves to Bologna where he meets and falls in love with Angela, a local blind girl played by Vanessa Incontrada. But their relationship isn't a simple one. Her parents don't believe that a simple teacher is worthy of their daughter, his parents protest because she is blind, and her ex-boyfriend may not be completely out of the picture. Adding one more wrench in the gears is a doctor who might be able to restore Angela's sight, leading Nello to wonder if she'll still feel for him if she isn't blind. Giancarlo Gianinni also stars as Nello's father. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Famed scholar, writer and rogue, Giovanni Giacomo Casanova de Salingalt (1725-98), known as "Casanova," is best known for the romantic exploits he claimed for himself in his memoirs. In this film, he is waiting to find out whether the authorities will allow him to spend his final years in Venice, the city of his birth. While he waits, the penniless late-middle-aged lover is approached by an acquaintance who invites him to stay at his country estate. Adding piquancy to the invitation is that his host's wife was one of his many conquests in earlier years. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Made in Italy is a multistoried film, set...in Italy, of course. An all-star cast appears in brief seriocomic vignettes about rich and poor, tourist and native. Director Nanni Loy exhibits the realistic and somewhat earthy technique he'd used on his earlier documentaries, with heavy emphasis on ironic punch lines. Filmed in 1965 by a Franco/Italian production team, Made in Italy received the best possible exposure upon its 1967 American release when clips were showcased on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Best bit: The "give to the poor" poster in an impoverished Italian mountain village. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This French/Italian historical spectacle was released in the US as Imperial Venus. Gina Lollobridgida, in her considerable prime, stars as Paolina Bonaparte, Napoleon's wanton, sensuous sister. We see Paolina through many affairs and her unhappy marriage of state. Her hot Corsican dalliance with Jules De Canouville (Stephen Boyd) ruins Paolina's status in court. Freudian scholars may be interested in the subliminal "jealousy" angle involving brother Napoleon (Raymond Pellegrin). Micheline Presle plays Josephine, who in this film is relegated to the background. The English dialogue for Venere Imperiale was written by John Michael Hayes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
