Mexican TV-soap actress Olympia Miraflores (Carmen Nogales) announces her ambition to compete in the Olympic javelin throw, but her manager Ed Pedernales (Damian Young) and her fans aren't exactly keen on the idea. Swimming across the Rio Grande, Olympia meets Billy Daniel (Jason Andrews), who has no job and lives in Laredo with his mother (Patricia Fiske). Billy begins coaching Olympia, but his angry mom becomes furious over the idea. After she throws him out of the house, leaving him with only a cookie jar of pocket change, Billy escalates his rulebook regimen for the actress-athlete into an intensive training schedule. A convict agrees to go undercover and gather evidence on a notorious crime lord in order to win an early release from prison in this tough, gritty crime drama. Much of the tension develops from the inner conflict of Jimmy Kilmartin (David Caruso), who feels torn between his desire to win freedom for the sake of his family and his belief in a code of honor that sees ratting on others as an unforgivable sin. His misgivings are compounded by fear when he learns that his target is to be the notorious Little Junior (Nicolas Cage), a violent eccentric with a hair-trigger temper. Luckily for the ex-con, Junior takes a shine to Jimmy, welcoming him into his inner circle. This drama, set in the gritty areas of New York's Lower Eastside and filmed in black and white, focuses upon the lonely and often pathetic lives of the down and out. Simon is a hustler who makes a minimal living by selling boot-leg homemade recording of underground metal-leather bands. He lives a grim life in dirty flat. He prefers solitude but has frequent and unwelcome visits from his girlfriend, a street dweller that wants to emulate him, and Shayme a junkie. The dull routine of his gray life is interrupted by a visit from a young woman from his hometown in Long Island. She is a former mental patient who was hospitalized in the same place as Simon's mother. Seeing her, brings up many unresolved feeling in Simon. Hubert Selby's controversial 1964 cult novel Last Exit To Brooklyn is adapted to the big screen by director Ulrich Edel in this drama. The story is set in the early 1950s in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a blighted waterfront town of boarded-up storefronts and striking factory workers. Harry Black (Stephen Lang), a machinist put in charge of the local union strike office, suddenly finds himself one of the most important men in town. But for all his sudden power, there's something disturbing Harry. He rejects his wife's caresses and discovers himself infatuated with a frail young man who calls himself Georgette (Alexis Arquette), who has a crush on well-muscled hood Vinnie (Peter Dobson). But Harry doesn't confront his problem head-on until he falls head-over-heels in love with Regina (Zette), a local transvestite. As the strike becomes more intense, Harry sinks deeper into an obsessive affair with Regina, using the strike fund to shower him/her with personal gifts. As Harry sinks into obsession, other characters float through the decaying streets. There's the attractive prostitute Tralala (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who falls in love with a sailor about to be shipped overseas. There is also an agreeable young man named Tommy (John Costelloe) who is beaten by his soon-to-be father-in-law Big Joe (Burt Young) for making his daughter Donna (Ricki Lake) pregnant.
