Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, and Marisa Tomei star in director Sidney Lumet's thriller concerning two brothers who hatch a plan to rob their parent's jewelry store. The Strike Team has been turned loose again, and immediately pays dividends. Shane (Walton Goggins) gets shot at while the team tries to bust a gang member, but it leads them to a massive money-laundering operation. Vic (Michael Chiklis) convinces Aceveda (Benito Martinez) to let Danny (Catherine Dent) go undercover to help the team nab Louis (Dominic Hoffman), the head of the operation. Shane continues to defend Mara (Michele Hicks) despite all the trouble her theft has caused. Vic tells him, "She's gonna be gone in a couple of months." Vic has another tryst with Lauren (Natalie Zea), but she refuses to leave her boyfriend, because he has threatened to commit suicide in the past. Vic and Corrine (Cathy Cahlin Ryan) begin to suspect that their youngest daughter is also autistic. Dutch (Jay Karnes) is granted a lengthy interview by the "cuddler rapist" suspect, William Faulkes (Clark Gregg), who confesses to his crimes. He and Dutch have a philosophical discussion about why he raped and murdered those elderly women, which turns out to be frustrating for both of them. One man's infidelity -- and the unusual way he chooses to deal with it -- leads to unusual consequences in this independent romantic comedy-drama. LuAnn (Billie James) is a woman engaged to marry Jake (Keskhemnu), a successful author of children's books. While LuAnn and Jake are deeply in love, Jake has something of a roving eye, and one night he confesses to her that he's been unfaithful. Jake proposes that LuAnn have a fling with another man, as a way of putting both parties in the relationship on an even keel. LuAnn, hurt by Jake's infidelity, isn't especially interested in sleeping with anyone else, but Jake is insistent, and in time she begins dating other men. Initially unable to find another partner with which she feels comfortable, LuAnn eventually meets Marcus (Keith Davis), who turns out to be close friends with Jake and was picked by him to be LuAnn's new lover. LuAnn soon finds herself increasingly drawn to Marcus, and in time she must decide if she wants to continue her relationship with Jake, or start over with Marcus. Jan-Michael Vincent plays a self-destructive beach bum to whom surfing is a Zen experience. We first meet Vincent in the devil-may-care 1960s, in the company of his carefree buddies William Katt and Gary Busey. The boys reunite ten years later, after one has served time in Vietnam. The beach is still there, the waves still break upon the shore, and towards the end of the film, the characters become people that we truly care about. Barbara Hale, the real-life mother of costar William Katt, makes a piquant supporting appearance. Contract on Cherry Street represented Frank Sinatra's TV movie debut--an event deemed worthy of a TV Guide cover story. Sinatra plays NYPD veteran Deputy Inspector Frank Hovannes, in charge of a special unit set up to battle organized crime. The murder of Hovannes' partner, coupled with departmental restrictions and legalities, leads the Inspector to organize a semi-vigilante group with three other like-minded officers. They murder an underworld honcho, in hopes of triggering a mob war that will result in the decimation of every gangster in the Big Apple. Edward Anhalt's script for Contract on Cherry Street can't make up its mind whether to emulate The Godfather or Kojak. Sinatra's own Artanis Productions was responsible for this film, so any praise or blame must ultimately fall upon Ol' Blue Eyes' shoulders. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

"Short eyes" is prison slang for a man who sodomizes little boys. Fitting this odious description is new inmate Bruce Davison, who is arrested and locked up with the scum of the earth. Despite their own depravities, Davison's fellow prisoners consider him the lowest form of human life, and proceed to treat him accordingly, in a series of appalling episodes that must have been as hard to film as they are to watch. Most of the supporting cast is comprised of real-life hoodlums, junkies and killers; small wonder that Davison retains his deer-in-the-headlights facial expression throughout the film.
