A routine look at the indominatible spirit of impoverished young boys in Morocco, this drama by Jacques Severac also does not ignore the rather oppressive conditions under which the boys live. In one story, a little fellow has set his heart on buying a sewing machine for his mother. Like the other shoe-shine boys, his goal of saving up money is almost impossible to meet yet after much travail he is finally able to get her a machine. Sadly enough, his triumph is destined to be short-lived when the much-desired sewing machine is broken in an accident. Undaunted, the lad decides the only thing for it is to start again from scratch. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
In this thriller, a greedy young woman becomes a police informer. Her father is in prison for participating in a jewel theft. The girl is looking for the jewels he hid. Unfortunately, she must compete with other real criminals. In the end she is arrested for killing her own lover. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Comedy and tragedy are thrown together in this undistinguished gangster flic by director Jacques Severac. Rather than focus on the gore of a murderous gangland rivalry or the rise to power of a mob boss, Le Pain de Jules looks at the downfall of an older mobster, past his prime and ripe for some serious mistakes. The gangster is not much different than any other older man caught in an emotional maelstrom over the charms of a young woman. In this case, the charmer's morals leave something to be desired -- at least according to the enamored hoodlum. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Bella Darvi, Henri Vilbert, (more)
Le Couteam sous la Gorge (The Knife to the Throat) is the Gallic equivalent of Hollywood's Ransom! Jean Servais stars as a prominent physician whose son is kidnapped. The twist here is that one of the film's ostensible villains is the hero. Jean Chevrier co-stars as a gangster whose life Servais once saved, and who takes it upon himself to rescue the kid single-handedly. For a big-budget production, Le Couteam sous la Gorge is surprisingly sparse and skimpy at times. The film was lensed in Cinepanoramic, a French variation on 20th Century-Fox's CinemaScope. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The first Arab-language talking picture, Siroco was produced by a French firm and released worldwide with French subtitles. A young Arabian lad falls in love with a girl of noble lineage but is prevented from marrying her by her parents. To prove his worth, he subjects himself to all sorts of dangers in the desert, including a deadly sandstorm. All turns out well when the hero is revealed to be the long-lost son of a powerful Sultan. The cast of Siroco was comprised of amateurs, hired more for their physical suitability to their roles than for any innate acting ability. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
