The tensions felt between Palestinians and Israelis forms the basis of this odd political drama that is based on a short story by Abraham Jehoshua. The tale centers on a history student, Noah, who becomes a forest ranger so he can have the quiet time he needs to complete his dissertation. He is stationed in the midst of a remote firetower in the center of a large forest where his only companions are a mute Arab and his daughter Nahida. When he learns that some of the Israeli-planted forest was placed upon the ruins of an Arab settlement destroyed in the last war, he becomes fixated with exploring the remains with his binoculars, wondering about the history and lives of those who once lived there. One night, he dreams that Indiana Jones comes to him and explains that history is but an illusion. Soon after, an enormous fire erupts, Abraham's phone line is cut, and he can do nothing, but rescue the girl. Later her father is arrested for arson even though there is no proof that he did it. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

But, as time passes, Attal must face more moral dilemmas as the work becomes more subversive and dishonest. Originally titled Hiuch Ha'Gdu, the Israeli-made Smile of the Lamb is set along the battle-torn West Bank. Military governor Makram Khouri tries to flush out some fugitive PLO terrorists by hanging the rotting, stinking carcass of a dead donkey in a village square. Israeli doctor Rami Danon forgets his animosity towards the PLO and, out of compassion, cuts the carcass down. For disobeying Khouri's orders, Danon becomes as much a fugitive as the Palestinians. While in hiding, Danon befriends Arab hermit Tuncel Kurtiz, whose adopted son is a member of the PLO. When the boy is killed, Danon offers himself as a hostage, willing to remain with the hermit until the Israelis leave the West Bank. An international award winner, Smile of the Lamb might very well run into distribution problems in certain politically sensitive areas of the US. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Set in an Israeli maximum security prison, Beyond the Walls (Meachori Hasoragim) focusses on an ethnic "war" between rival prisoners. The opposing factions are headed by Israeli Arnon Zadok and Arab Muhamad Bakri. Insults beget violence, and before long the entire prison threatens to erupt in an orgy of bloodshed. What finally cools the tensions is so simple and touching that to reveal it here would spoil it for you. Suffice to say that the rival gangs decide to organize a united front against the cruelties of their captors. Beyond the Walls was nominated for a Best Foreign Picture Academy Award. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
