Former TV documentary filmmaker Mel Stuart tries to inject an acceptable degree of verisimilitude in Mean Dog Blues. A victim of circumstance, country and western musician Paul Ramsey (Gregg Henry) finds himself on a Southern chain gang. Captain Omar Kinsman (George Kennedy) snarls a lot as the obligatory sadistic prison guard, but the film's real villains are Victor and Donna Lacey (William Windom and Tina Louise) as the Bonnie-and-Clyde couple who get Henry into trouble. Listed as editor is Housley Stevenson, the son of the late Hollywood character-actor Onslow Stevens. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Greydon Clark has mined almost every exploitation genre from horror (Satan's Cheerleaders) to T&A (Joysticks) to lambada (The Forbidden Dance). Here, he turns his attention to blaxploitation, transforming the mainstream comedy Shampoo into a story about a black playboy (John Daniels) who is both a hairdresser and a skilled fighter. Daniels battles gangsters in brutal fight scenes involving chainsaws and pool-cue impalements. If that isn't enough, the requisite sex, torture, and homophobia are brought in as well. Clark's previous genre foray, The Bad Bunch, had been released to several theaters as Nigger Lover, which should give some clue as to the mentality at work. The director returned to racial themes in 1989 with Skinheads: The Second Coming of Hate. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

To silence the taunts of his young friends, Jamie tries to prove that he's a "real Cartwright" by showing up at school with Ben's rifle-and without Ben's permission. Inevitably, the rifle is broken, and a reluctant Ben punishes Jamie for lying about the incident. Embittered, Jamie runs away from the Ponderosa, unwilling to accept the notion that Ben is being harsh only because he truly loves the boy. Lou Frizzell makes one of his earliest appearances as ranch hand Dusty Rhodes. Written by Preston Wood, "The Gold Plated Rifle" was first telecast on January 10, 1971. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
