Rock & roll mayhem characterizes this swinging 1960s musical that chronicles the adventures of a free-wheeling draft dodger who teams up with a biker and his movie-star-wannabe girl friend and heads for Tinseltown. Once there, the biker goes to meet his sister-the-go-go girl and her boss at the local disco. The manager approves of the aspiring starlet's moves and decides he will replace his drug-addicted lead dancer with her. Meanwhile, a club janitor learns that the biker, the club owner and another are murderous dope pushers. This causes trouble for the actress and the draft dodger. After extricating themselves from danger, the evader decides that he must screw up his courage and do his patriotic duty. Songs include: "Do You Want to Laugh or Cry?" In this bargain basement biker film, a soldier returns from 'Nam and learns that his brother-the-biker has been accused of killing the boy friend of the sheriff's daughter and incarcerating. Believing his sibling innocent, the vet takes over the gang and roars off to find the truth. His brother's former girl friend and the sheriff's daughter assist. In the end, they are successful and the brother is released. Allied Artists' Gun Hawk puts Rory Calhoun through his usual paces as an aging gunman. Calhoun has pretty much retired from shoot outs, and now runs a small town populated by outlaws. He befriends hotheaded fast gun Rod Lauren, who behaves as impulsively as Calhoun had in his earlier days. When the outlaws turn on Calhoun and shoot him down, the mortally wounded gunslinger tries to goad Lauren into a fight so that he can die with a modicum of dignity. This conventional wartime drama is comprised of an inexplicable mix of moods and genres as a U.S. submarine in World War II heads out to the island of Bikini in the South Pacific to destroy the remains of a sunken sister ship. The ruined ship has some delicate radar equipment on board that cannot fall into enemy hands. Meanwhile, the Japanese naval command is sending out its ships as control over the Pacific is at issue. This builds up into a major sea-going confrontation as the forces on each side are strengthened and expanded. Incongruously mixed in with the growing tension is a love story between Lt. Morgan Hayes (Tab Hunter) and the voluptuous Reiko (Eva Six). Frankie Avalon, as one of the seamen, sings a few songs, and others contributing to the action are Jim Backus as a chief bosun's mate, and Gary Crosby as another seaman. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
