Set in Kentucky during the slavery days of the Old South, this adaptation of the novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe tells of the workings of the underground railroad, a secretive system formed by whites and blacks which allowed slaves to escape into the northern states. This drama, directed in Yugoslavia by Hungarian Geza Radvanyi, tends to stray from the original story and contains many contradictions to historical fact. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

In this German comedy, singer Freddy Quinn discovers that a vein of copper runs through the tract of Canadian land he has inherited, and he must battle with a greedy neighbor to secure his mineral rights. ~ Iotis Erlewine, All Movie Guide
Like many of its Hollywood counterparts, the German all-star musical Schlagerparade (Hit Parade) is more memorable for its individual components than the sum total. For the record, the plot is as old as the Alps. Young composer Walter Giller can't sell his tunes; his girl friend Germaine Damar sneaks one of Giller's songs into a publisher's office; the song becomes a hit, but no one knows who wrote it; by the end of the story, they know who wrote it. On this fragile storyline are hung 16 songs, each performed by an international musical favorite. Guest stars include Maurice Chevalier, Stan Kenton, Margot Hielscher, and the Barnabas Von Geszy Orchestra. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This frothy Austrian musical concerns two pretty working girls (Hetty Mayen, Inga Konradi), who lose all their money at the racetrack. With no carfare, our heroines are forced to walk from Vienna to their homes in St. Gilgen, a journey that normally takes six hours by train. Happily, the girls find true romance along the way in the forms of Hans Holt and Josef Meingrad. The musical score is the handiwork of the talented Robert Stolz, whose catchy ditties and ballads more than compensate for the film's lack of story values and coherence. Critics felt that the film might have had possibilities outside of Austria, but only with some judicious editing. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Hans Holt
