Allied Artists' Gun Hawk puts Rory Calhoun through his usual paces as an aging gunman. Calhoun has pretty much retired from shoot outs, and now runs a small town populated by outlaws. He befriends hotheaded fast gun Rod Lauren, who behaves as impulsively as Calhoun had in his earlier days. When the outlaws turn on Calhoun and shoot him down, the mortally wounded gunslinger tries to goad Lauren into a fight so that he can die with a modicum of dignity. This undistinguished teen melodrama features Brett Halsey as Nick, a lowlife who is hiding out from the law because he killed a man in a mugging. He escapes to another town and starts working as a mechanic in an auto repair shop. Not one to keep a low profile for long, Nick alienates just about everyone by beating out the competition in sports-car races, beating his own drum as loudly as he can, and just plain beating up on other men. He complements those activities by hitting on any attractive female, regardless of her status. Both Nick and the viewers are clearly being set up for his ultimate just desserts. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This uproariously bad monster mess is set on a remote tropical island, where a native prince places a curse on the elders just prior to his execution for breaking tribal law, promising to return from the dead for revenge. He does, of course -- but he can only manage to return from the grave as a giant walking tree. (His obvious displeasure with having assumed this shape is indicated by the tree-thing's permanently constipated expression.) There is some indication given that his resurrection has something to do with atomic testing taking place on the island, but this is obviously incidental to the real plot, which treats viewers to endless scenes of natives running in horror from a shambling, ticked-off rubber stump. In print, this sounds like broad comedy material, but the only laughs to be found in this clunker are purely unintentional. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Tod Andrews, Tina Carver, (more)
