One mistake causes the lives of two women to fold like a line of dominoes in this independent drama. Carrie (Darling Narita) and Michelle (Ali Raymer) are a pair of twenty-something hipsters who, while dumpster-diving for cool trash one day, happen to find a gun. Carrie makes the mistake of taking it home, and one day her roommate Rikki (Jay Diola) flips out after doing too much speed and uses it to commit suicide. Michelle was strongly attracted to Rikki, and when she hears about his death, she snaps, finds the gun, and shoots Diablo (David Carrera), the dealer who had been selling drugs to both Rikki and herself. Panicking, Carrie and Michelle are convinced Diablo's partners will be looking for them, and they high-tail it out of town. A severely disoriented Michelle starts doing massive amounts of speed, and between her erratic behavior and her poor sexual judgements, Carrie is at the end of her patience when she encounters Shawn (Gavin Hignight), a nerdy but likable fellow she meets while the two women are on the lam. When Michelle's behavior lands her in jail, Shawn helps Carrie bail her out, but Carrie isn't so sure that's the right thing to do anymore. Fans of vintage punk rock will want to keep an eye peeled while watching Tweeked; Chris D. of the Flesheaters and D.H. Peligro of the Dead Kennedys both appear in supporting roles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

No Way Out is told in flashback as Naval officer Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) is grilled by his superiors regarding a recent "unpleasantness." While at a Washington party, Tom meets Susan Atwel (Sean Young), and they're soon sharing a steamy love scene in the back of a limo (marvelously parodied in 1993's Hot Shots! Part Deux). Several months pass before Tom meets Susan again; he discovers she's the mistress of the US Secretary of Defense David Brice (Gene Hackman). When Susan is murdered by Brice, his loyal aide (Will Patton) dutifully destroys the evidence and invents the fallacious theory that a KGB mole was responsible. Tom is assigned to locate that mole -- a perilous situation, since Tom knows that no such mole exists, but must go along with the charade since he was the last person who was seen with Susan. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this semi-improvised look at life along the edges of L.A.'s rock scene, Chris D. (real name Chris Desjardins, leader of the L.A. punk band The Flesh Eaters) plays Jeff, a singer/songwriter who has suddenly gone missing. Two of his friends, bandmate Dean (John Doe, from the group X) and faithful roadie Chris (Chris Shearer), seem anxious to get in touch with him, and with good reason: Jeff and his band were stiffed by a club owner on payment for a recent gig, so they broke into the club's safe and took off with the loot. Now Jeff and the money have vanished, and Dean and Chris are torn between their concern for their friend's safety and their need to get their hands on the cash. Meanwhile, Jeff wanders aimlessly in Mexico, seemingly content after cutting himself off from the turmoil of his life in Los Angeles. Border Radio features members of several important California punk and roots bands in significant roles, including Dave Alvin of The Blasters and Texacala Jones of Tex and the Horseheads; Green on Red are shown playing a club date and The Lazy Cowgirls are featured on the soundtrack. Co-directors Allison Anders, Dean Lent, and Kurt Voss were UCLA film students who met while working on the crew of Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas; Anders went on to make several notable features, including Gas Food Lodging and Grace of My Heart. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
