A young woman who has mastered the strategies of the chess board finds it doesn't always help her in the real world in this drama from Italy. Maria (Barbara Bobulova) is a teenaged chess expert who displays an ease and assurance in the game that she lacks in her life. Maria works closely with Sterlizia (Tony Bertorelli), a chess coach who has been tutoring her in the game for some time, though Emilio (Ettore Bassi), a journalist working on a story about Maria, is convinced that their relationship is more abusive than mutually beneficial. As Emilio follows Maria while she plays a series of important matches against Italy's reigning chess champion, the girl receives some startling news -- she was adopted. Youthful idealism meets teenage lust in this teen comedy from Italy. A large group of teenage activists are occupying their high school as part of a protest against privatized education and efforts for greater standardization among students. But one of them, Silvio (Silvio Muccino), is more than a bit preoccupied by Valentina (Giulia Carmignani), a pretty girl in his class who unfortunately already has a boyfriend, Martino (Simone Pagani). One day, Silvio is hanging out with Valentina and Martino, and Martino steps away long enough for Silvio to kiss Valentina. Silvio then makes the mistake of telling his best friend Ponzi (Giuseppe Sanfelice di Monteforte) about it; soon the entire school knows, including a very angry Martino and an equally enraged Claudia (Giulia Steigerwalt), who has a crush on Silvio. As things get more complicated for him at school, Silvio is finding no respite at home; his parents (Anna Galiena and Luca De Flippo) want to know why they don't talk anymore, his brother (Enrico Silvestrin) needs romantic advice, and his sister (Giulia Ciccone) has a secret. To get a better feel for contemporary teenage life, writer/director Gabriele Muccino collaborated on the screenplay with two 16-year-olds, Silvio Muccino and Adele Tulli, both of whom have roles in the film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Fausto (Gaetano Carotenuto) is a deaf boy who has been trained from birth to live exclusively in the hearing world. His mother (Anna Bonaiuto) has refused to allow him to meet or interact with other deaf children, much less learn sign language. As a consequence, he gets along (with some difficulties) in the hearing world; he holds a job at a bank, and has a "normal" girlfriend. His mother cannot or will not see that despite his "success," Fausto still feels like a second-class citizen since he will always be somewhat disadvantaged among the hearing. His spirits are boosted when he meets a girl (Chiara Caselli) who has dropped out of school; he is able to persuade her to return to school, and he is able to persuade the school board that she knows enough to sit for her final exams with her classmates. Eventually this sense of accomplishment enables him to win a victory of his own over his iron-willed mother. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

More a collection of characters and scenery in the region of Parma than a drama with a hefty storyline, this film focuses on three main protagonists. Anna (Valeria D'Obici) is a waitress who develops an interest in Tom (Thom Hoffman) who rolls into town on his jeep to photograph the peasants and townies. The young Andrea (Andrea Puglisi) is also in town visiting his aunts. The three young people meet and decide to go do things together; they fish, they banter and scamper about, and in general are supplemented by a wide range of local color that is just a tad over the top. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this stultifying mess, director Lamberto Bava and his co-writer, the ubiquitous Dardano Sacchetti, manage to rip off nearly every giallo cliche in history and still deliver a tedious film. Cop Leonardo Treviglio and his wife have a loud fight and she ends up stabbed to death with an ice-pick. His buddy Paolo Marco is put on the case and believes Treviglio did it, but criminal psychologist Valeria d'Obici (who often uses the technical term "maniac") believes he's innocent. She thinks it was a killer named Tribbo, who supposedly died in a fire many years before. Treviglio is shot to death by another cop, but the murders go on. Eventually, the killer follows Marco's daughter (Lara Wendel) and two friends to a secluded hotel for the lengthy final standoff. Viewers who have seen any of Dario Argento's thrillers (The Bird With the Crystal Plumage in particular) will guess who the killer is in about 15 minutes, and the hotel scenes -- borrowed wholesale from Torso -- fail to generate the least bit of suspense. It's hard to believe from a director who made the stylish A Blade in the Dark only a few years before, but even Bava's legendary father had his off-days. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

This comedy-drama explores the sexual misadventures of a variety of suburban dwellers, including a few straying husbands and wives, and some non-husbands and non-wives too. After Sandro (Christian De Sica) and Lorenzo (Massimo Boldi) pack their wives and kids off for a brief vacation, the two men decide to look for some close encounters of the sexual kind. Sandro goes on several dates while Lorenzo takes up with his less-than-stable secretary, which proves to be a big mistake. Meanwhile, Gianluca (Jerry Cala) is an ambitious advertising executive who has little knack for communicating with the woman he loves. Finally, a car salesman (Enzo Greggio) chases anyone in skirts, full throttle, but gets a surprise in a few instances. None of these stories tends to overlap with the others. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this routine sci-fi sequel, Trash (Mark Gregory) is back in action again after his introduction in 1990: The Bronx Warriors, to defend that much-maligned New York burrough from total extinction at the hands of a vicious corporate giant. The General Construction Corporation plans on building luxury high-rises in the Bronx, but since the current Bronxonians are in the way, they have to be exterminated, obviously. Meanwhile, the media are to be spoon-fed the story that the good Bronx citizens have been relocated to New Mexico, apparently quite willingly. The only obstacle to the evil corporation's designs is a brave journalist, Moon (Valeria D'Obici) who is inspired to suggest that if the corporation's CEO could be kidnapped and held for ransom, they just might save the Bronx from all those luxury apartments. The man the fate offers to carry out this project is Strike (Timothy Brent), a king among thieves. The remainder of the story lurches from one gunfight to the next. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Based on a real-life mystery in the newspapers after World War I, this conventional, straightforward story is about a poorly-dressed man who is brought into the police station in Turin for stealing flower pots from the cemetery. He is rather brutally interrogated, and then because he has no idea who he is or where he belongs, he is put into an asylum for the mentally disturbed. After his photograph is published in the newspapers, a woman shows up at the institution claiming that he is Professor Canella, her missing and wealthy husband. The news obtains the release of the amnesiac, but his claim is quickly and hotly contested by another family, arguing that the man is an imposter. As a result, his case goes back to court and in the meantime, the "professor" is put in jail. As the courtroom drama continues, there are various clues that suggest whether or not the amnesiac has been accurately identified and by whom. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Professional soldier Bernard Giraudeau is enmeshed in an affair with the beautiful but very much married Laura Antonelli. Transferred to a remote outpost, Giraudeau discovers to his chagrin that the only woman in the region (Valeria D'Obici) is about as appealing as a plate of pickles. Even so, Giraudeau falls madly in love with the woman, utterly forgetting Antonelli. He also forgets that he's a human being at fade-out time, metamorphosing into an epileptic bear! Perhaps Passion of Love made more sense in its original French-language version, Passione D'Amore. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this off-beat, kind of kinky drama, the viewer learns the origin of the word "masochism." It comes from the last name of writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, and this film tells the story of his S&M marriage to a lower-class woman. He literally and figuratively prostrates himself before his wife, begging that she take lovers. The marriage eventually dissolves, but not before he convinces her to beat and humiliate him. It should be noted, that this is a serious drama, not an exploitation, or pornographic movie. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
