This biopic chronicles the life and rise to fame of the original waltz king, Johann Strauss. The composer developed his radical new sound while conducting a small band in a restaurant. It was his mistress, a milliner, who created the dance. Soon after its appearance, the waltz became the rage of Vienna. The new-found wealth and fame goes to Strauss' head and he ends up abandoning his wife to tour Europe with his lover. Years pass before he returns to Vienna. There the curmudgeonly Strauss discovers that his son, Johann Jr. has become almost as famous for his waltzes. Family discord ensues, but just before the elder Strauss dies, he hears his son's music and the two finally reconcile. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Dany Robin is Naughty Martine in this ooh-la-la French romantic comedy. Set at a fancy girl's boarding school in the French Alps, the film casts Robin as a natural-born fibber, whose tendency to weave tall tales causes ever so much trouble for her parents, her teachers and her classmates. Leaving the confines of the school to become a "woman of the world," the wide-eyed Martine links up with The Baron (Lucien Baroux), a slick con artist. Romance enters Martine's life thanks to the timely arrival of an avalanche -- followed by the appearance of handsome mountain guide Pierre (Henri Vidal). But when Pierre turns out to be a jerk, Martine finds true love in the arms of worldly composer Brevannes (Claude Dauphin). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The scene is postwar Vienna. Displaced person Toni Sponer (Gustav Froelich), employed as a cabdriver, wants to leave the city but has no identification papers. When one of his passengers is murdered, Toni appropriates the dead man's papers and "becomes" one Jack Mortimer. Unfortunately, there are several shady characters around and about who want Jack Mortimer dead. The location-filmed finale finds Toni at the mercy of the real Mortimer's murderer. Four different production companies had a hand in the making of this minor melodrama. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Gustav Froehlich, Cornell Borchers, (more)
Wien Tanzt is an old-fashioned musical extravaganza in the tradition of pre-war Austrian films. The story centers upon Waltz King Johann Strauss (Adolf Wohlbrueck) and his "progressive" composer son Richard. It's a tale that had been told before on screen, and would be told again; nothing new has been added here concerning the friction between the senior and junior Strauss. Still, the music is terrific -- indeed, to many observers the music was the film's sole saving grace. The feminine interest in Wien Tanzt is provided by Marte Harell, who refreshingly is not a Hollywood-style glamourpuss. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Marte Harell
Former Hollywood musical director (and erstwhile government spy) Boris Morros was one of the producers of the British Tale of Five Cities. Bonar Colleano stars as British soldier Bob Mitchell, who has picked up American habits and speech patterns while employed in the U.S. Suffering from amnesia, Mitchell is led to believe that he is an American GI, though of course no records exist to verify this. Mitchell's confusion prompts a Manhattan-based magazine to launch a search for Bob's true identity, a search leading inexorably to the girls he left behind during WW II. The "five cities" visited during this exploratory journey are Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and London; Mitchell's Roman sweetheart is played by Gina Lollobridgida, while his Viennese amour is Eva Bartok. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The story of Maria Theresia of the old Austro-Hungarian Hapsburg regime is reverently brought to the screen in this lengthy biopic. The title character is played by Paula Wessely, who also produced the film. Wessely's portrayal of Maria Theresia as a woman motivated by envy and revenge enlivens an otherwise plodding script. Of the supporting players, only Otto Tressler, Cees Laseur and Rosa Albach Retty managed to avoid being outshone by the star. Though Paula Wessely had been making films since 1934, Maria Theresia was the first occasion in which she controlled every aspect of production. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Jean-Louis (Henri Vidal) makes his living by trapping deadly snakes and selling them to zoos. In love with shopgirl Simone (Francoise Arnoul), Jean-Louis gallantly comes to her defense during a minor skirmish with a policeman. Things get out of hand, and before long Jean-Louis is a fugitive from justice, leading the authorities on an appropriately serpentine chase through the streets of Paris. The film's "serpent" motif is further developed when Simone lands a job as a cabaret "snake dancer." If the viewer draws any analogies between Danger is a Woman and the story of Adam and Eve, then screenwriter Jacques Laurent (who adapted his own novel La Mort a Boire) has accomplished what he set out to do. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Françoise Arnoul, Henri Vidal, (more)
L'Aiguille Rouge is a mountain-climbing melodrama, a genre more indigenous to the German cinema than to French films. Set in the French Alps, the film stars Michel Auclair and Michelle Philippe as Florian and Myra, young lovers fascinated with scaling the heights (in every sense of the phrase!) Their ardor reaches a fever pitch at a mountain resort, but tragedy looms on the horizon. Director E. E. Reinert stages many of the climbing sequences in the studio, using alpine mockups in the background. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
- Starring:
- Michel Auclair, Mich_le Philippe, (more)
If a French film of the 1940s or 1950s had Claude Dauphin in the cast, the producers were assured of a decent box-office turnover. In Ainsi Finit la Nuit, Dauphin is teamed with another audience favorite, Anne Vernon. The stars play a pair of clandestine lovers, while Henri Guisol is cast as Vernon's insensitive husband. The film is strongest in its first half, where characterization rather than situation dominates. The final portion of the film suffers from the scriptwriter's attempts to wrap things up as quickly as possible. Ainsi Finit la Nuit was also released as L'Affair. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Anne Vernon, Katherine Kath, (more)
Tombe du Ciel (Dropped from Heaven) is a showcase for the expansive talents of that genial ham Claude Dauphin. The star plays one of five musicians -- four men and a girl -- stranded in a rural community. While at dinner, the male musicians get royally drunk, waking with monumental hangovers and no memories of the past night's events. But Dauphin seems to recall that he dallied in the hayloft with the female member of the band -- and nine months later, it looks as if he was right! A bit too mature for the character he portrays, Claude Dauphin nonetheless scores on sheer personality. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Jacqueline Gauthier, Gisèle Pascal, (more)

- Madeleine Sologne, Marguerite Moreno, (more)
